What are french curtains
It’s easy to guess from the name that this type of curtains was invented in France, a country that is famous for its love of luxury and special style and chic all over the world, and french curtains, also known as marquises, provide further evidence for these allegations. They have a somewhat pompous appearance, attracting attention with their splendor and splendor.
They can be long, up to the floor or reach the length of the windowsill, if necessary, the awnings can be collected upwards using a special lifting mechanism. When raised, they form a luxurious draped lambrequin. But the presence of numerous magnificent festivals does not allow you to remove the curtain completely, therefore, thin, soft fabrics are used in its manufacture: silk, cambric, organza, in most cases translucent - this makes it possible to use the marquise as a day curtain, without resorting to raising it.
Looking at the French curtains in the photo, you can see that they look equally beautiful if they are used independently, as well as when supplemented with curtains sewn from heavy silk or taffeta made in classic style and lambrequins. To give the products a finished look, their edges are decorated with ruffles, tassels, cords, fringe, frills.
Features of the French
According to the assembly technology, French curtains are classified as cascading, in fact they resemble flowing water, their beautifully laid folds look picturesque and very artistic in designing the window opening, emphasizing a romantic or aristocratic accent in the interior.
Awnings are not rational to use on windows that open - a certain inconvenience will be the inability to completely raise the curtains, an ideal option would be to decorate windows with a blank top with such curtains - the curtains will rise to its level and be fixed.
In which interior is it appropriate to use marquises
Traditionally, marquises use large living rooms or dining rooms with an interior that is characterized by signs of a classic style, empire style or romantic. They look good in combination with the Art Nouveau style, giving it a special, bourgeois chic. The use of marquises is also possible in rooms decorated in more modern styles, but only if all the details of the interior are designed in light, pastel, restrained shades.
Recently, they began to be used in the kitchen, but in this case, some nuances and features should be taken into account. French curtains for the kitchen are most appropriate if the interior is decorated in a country style, it is possible to use them in more modern styles in order to give the world perfect kitchen appliances and furniture made of metal and plastic some soulfulness and comfort. Materials for kitchen curtains should be selected those that lend themselves well to washing, for example - polyester.
For children's rooms, the marquises can hardly be considered an acceptable option - they significantly limit the access of light, their numerous folds serve as a place for dust accumulation. But if it was decided to resort to just such an option in the nursery - then the length of the curtains should not be longer than before the windowsill - they should not interfere with games. Occasionally they are used to create cozy girl's rooms.
The atmosphere in the bedroom is an ideal place to experiment with French curtains. It will be appropriate cosiness and romantic mood that they create, attractive will be the opportunity to beautifully protect themselves from the attention of the outside world.
French are also often used in public buildings, for example: in wedding palaces, concert and exhibition halls, theaters and museums, restaurants.
French-style curtains - what color scheme to choose for them
First of all, the color scheme of the material should be in harmony with the shades used to create the interior. If possible, preference should be given to plain, translucent fabrics that have pastel, soft shades: creamy, beige, dairy. Fabrics in pink colors fill the space with warm highlights, green and blue shades will give the same room a feeling of coolness and depth.
When choosing fabric for marquises, patterns should be avoided - when assembling festoons, they will deform and give the curtain a not very attractive look.
How to sew French curtains
If you appreciated the interior of the room and decided that the marquise is the most suitable version of the curtains for it, then you should immediately clarify how much this pleasure will cost you: they will need much more fabric than usual.
Experts recommend using the following factors when calculating the amount of tissue:
- for hard materials, such as organza, you need to multiply the width of the window by 1.8,
- for soft tissues, such as a veil - by 2.3,
- for tulle made of natural material or chiffon - by 2.5.
Saving on fabrics is not recommended - the curtain tends to taper strongly under its own weight in its lower part. Therefore, with a cornice width of 3 m, the cut should be at least 5.4 m. Of course, a fabric of this width cannot be found, so you will have to carefully connect two or three points. Do not forget to add at least 10 cm to the hem and seams.
To calculate the height of the curtain will be minimal
- coefficient 2, it is used in the calculation of the softest materials: chiffon and natural tulle,
- a coefficient of 2.5 is acceptable for a veil-like fabric,
- for hard organza - 3.
As you can see, the calculation of the material is very simple, difficulties will arise if it is necessary to grind huge panels.
As for the shade of the material, then you should obey the color scheme of the room, but remember that choosing shades is best gentle, pastel, light, often the most effective option is to use white.
When sewing French curtains with your own cookies, you should stop the choice on fabrics of light and translucent, silky, with a satin sheen - they look especially beautiful in folds.
Having chosen the fabric, you can proceed to cutting and sewing it. This is best done on a large table, where it would be possible to spread out the fabric and trim it. If there is no such table, you will have to do all the procedures on the floor in a large room.
Next, we determine which of the sides of the canvas will be lateral, bend them by 1.5 cm in two additions, sweep them, then sew the seams, and steam them with a hot iron. Then the fabric is folded 2 cm from the bottom in two additions, basted and sewn on a sewing machine. Now you can thread cords into the seams; their color must necessarily match the color of the fabric.
The step between the wings can be different - from 25 to 50 cm, depending on the dimensions of the window opening, but in any case there should not be less than three wings. According to the marked points, at the place of fabric collection, we pin a strip of fabric 3 cm wide (to create a drawstring, you can use a regular satin ribbon that matches the main fabric in color perfectly), bend its edges by 0.7-0.9 mm and attach them. We put cords into all the drawn wings, the upper part of them can be fixed, let the lower one remain free.
We assemble the upper part of the curtain to the size of the fixing tape corresponding to the width of the cornice, attach it to the tape and attach it. We wrap the edges of the fastening braid on both sides for a couple of centimeters and attach it on the wrong side. By attaching the curtain to the ledge with the help of cords, you can drape it to the desired length.
What cornices to choose
Eaves for French can be used very different: string, round, rail, special profile, designed for lifting curtains. Of course, the most convenient will be the use of the last of these options - it will allow you to lower or raise the curtain, collecting it in more magnificent warehouses. When using such a profile, it will be necessary to additionally sew a ring on the inside of the fabric (along the wings) and stretch cords (cords) through them.
You can control the raising of the curtains manually or remotely - using the installed electric drive. The automatic method may be required in large rooms, such as conference rooms, galleries, restaurants, where the curtains are especially large due to the high and wide window openings, and therefore not light weight. But whatever the device of the cornice, its external design should harmoniously combine with other elements of the decor of the room.
