Choose ceramic tiles, installation technology or how to make the roof beautiful
Ceramic tiles came to us from the distant past, even the ancient Romans burned clay tiles and covered them with the roofs of their houses. Since then, ceramic tile in European architecture has occupied a special position, now the roofing material imitates various shapes and different colors. Thanks to modern changes, the tile is able to give the building a historical or modern look and protect your home from weather conditions with a guarantee of at least 30 years.

Ceramic tile production
The main raw material for the production of tiles is clay with a low content of marl. In addition to clay, natural ceramic tiles include additional components (quartz sand, crushed brick, iron) to improve the material. At the preparation stage, the ingredients are crushed and mixed, then the desired shape of the plates is formed under the press.
The next stage is the drying of the product during the day, where 20% of the moisture is reduced to 1.5%. After drying, the formed tiles are fired in an oven at a temperature of 900-1200 C, thermal treatment gives the material a porous structure. An equally important process that affects service life and quality is slow cooling. Finished ceramic tiles differ in shape and color.
Types of ceramic tiles
Ceramic tiles can be divided into types. During creation, the material is stained with coatings such as agnob or glaze. Agnobated ceramic tiles are covered with a thin layer of clay, so that the matte color of the coating becomes resistant to sunlight. Glazed tiles acquire a bright color and luster, glaze better repels dirt and prevents the spread of mold. Natural ceramic tiles are not painted and have a natural red-brown color.
Tiles are distinguished by their shape, each tile shape has its own name characterizing the origin. Also, in addition to the classic forms, manufacturers create their own, modern proposals. The main types of ceramic tiles - German, Spanish, beaver tail, undulating, smooth, diamond-shaped, nun monk, two-groove, gross, monastery.
It should be noted that modern tiles, such as glass (as an alternative to ceramic) and non-standard in size. Glass tiles were developed in Sweden in 2010 and received the award as the best new product of the year. Such a tile is made in two versions - completely from glass or from fiberglass. The weight of the tile does not differ from the usual one, it can be used to illuminate the attic, it is easily self-cleaning from snow (snow melts from heating the roof), and the glass roof, heated by the sun, can heat the house.
Non-standard size, large tiles (300x480 mm) are more convenient to lay, but wide-format shingles are heavier than usual by weight. To cover 1 m2, only 10-12 pieces will be required, instead of 14-15 tiles of standard size.
Right choice
Benefits
-
Tiles are heavier than other roofing materials, due to which, the best thermal and acoustic parameters are achieved.
-
In summer, the roof protects the room from heat, and in winter from heat loss.
-
Effectively suppresses tile noise of rain and hail, in case of damage by hail, the tile is easy to replace.
-
Since the product is 100% natural, ceramics provide a healthy building microclimate.
-
The traditional ceramic roof has a high resistance to frost, namely 150 cycles of freezing and thawing.
-
Tile strength is estimated at 100 or more years.
-
The material is used on all types of roofs - from sloping to a tower, provided that the tiles are selected correctly.
-
The colors of ceramic tiles are stable and do not change due to weather conditions.
Design
When it comes to design and color, ceramic tiles are unbeatable. Among the tiles, it is easy to choose according to your preferences color, pattern on the tile, size and shape. The surface of the material can be glossy or matte depending on the coating, the colors are standard or bright.
An interesting solution is the combination of different shades in the design, also, modern manufacturers began to produce shingles with mixed colors, for example brown with red, which looks very interesting.
Ceramic tiles braas (formerly RuppCeramika) are especially distinguished in the construction market not only in quality but also in design, this is a unique style and luxurious shades of precious stones.
Mounting
When planning to cover the roof with ceramic tiles, make sure that your structure is strong enough to support a weight reaching 50 kg / m2 or more. You can not install ceramic tiles on a wooden house of a fresh construction, you should wait until the house sits down and begin work in about a year.
The next task is to determine the angle of the roof. The optimum angle of inclination is 45 degrees, the minimum angle of inclination is 15 degrees. If the roof is complex in shape, it is worth exploring all types of ceramic tiles, each has its own fastening feature and can affect the roof's resistance to damage.
The tile is fastened in two ways: on the side - the groove runs along the length of the side of the tile or on the top of the tile, both types of fastening are similar, the grooves of the tile in this case are adjusted to each other. There are plates in which only one side is a lock or both at once.
Usually, the tile is laid on the basis of wooden battens (lathing) and remains in place due to its weight without additional fasteners. On the edges of the roof, along the eaves, ridges and chimneys, mechanical fastening is required using special clamps or bolts. Mechanical fastening may be required when the roof is tilted in the range of 40-60 degrees, every third or fifth plate is fastened. Monk nun and beaver tail roof tiles are installed using self-tapping screws, regardless of tilt.
Roof waterproofing before installing the tiles is performed in two versions - construction film and roofing material. The installation of tiles of ceramic tiles starts from the lower edge of the roof, the laying method varies depending on the type of tile and the shape of the roof, in order to prevent the trimming of the tiles, it is possible to align the tiles on top of each other or change its position. Pay attention to the accuracy of abutment at such points of the roof structure as pipes, corners and ridges, ceramic components will help you with this.
Ceramic tile price, which is the highest among other roofing materials, is quite difficult to install. Every little thing is important here, so you should know that poor-quality work can be very expensive in the long run.
