How to install a lock on a gate - we carry out installation of a padlock
After choosing the appropriate model of the castle, you can proceed with its installation. For work, you will need a welding machine, drill, grinder with a circle for cutting metal, a metal scriber and a square. From the materials you will need a small piece of a three-millimeter steel sheet.
It will be much easier to solve the problem if a welded cross-beam is located at the height of the castle, approximately 85-90 cm from the ground. To mark the place of fastening of the lock, position the lock so that one of its mounting holes falls on a horizontally profiled pipe, the handle and the core are higher or lower. In the frame, the place of the future hole and recess for the crossbar is marked. If the pillar adjacent to the gate has insufficient width, or a pipe is used instead, a metal plate or piece of corner is welded onto them, on which the mating part of the lock will be located.
Next, you will need to drill holes in the frame for fasteners, in the profiled sheet - under the handle, if it is available and on a turn-key basis. The holes are drilled along the contours and treated with a special nozzle for a drill - a roller cutter, or manually - using a file. Do the same with the arrangement of the groove under the crossbar.
Next, proceed to fasten the lock and install the core. A common problem that arises in the process of work is the inability to put nuts on the threads of the bolts - this is prevented by corrugated board. If self-tapping screws were used when attaching the latter to the frame, then they can be unscrewed, after fastening the lock - re-secured. If rivets were used as a fastener during the assembly of the gate, then it is more rational to use metal screws to fix the lock. In this case, you do not need to drill holes for the fasteners. There is another option: first, drill holes of small diameter, then cut the threads for screws with a tap.
In the absence of a cross-beam at the height necessary for installing the lock, you will need to weld an additional plate onto the gate frame.
How to put a mortise lock on a gate
If you decide to install a mortise lock, then you should stop the choice on a model with a sufficient level of protection. Considering the recommendations of the masters, it is necessary to provide for the subsequent installation of a special metal case that will help keep the castle from getting moisture in it, in addition, a castle protected in this way will become more problematic for possible attacks by burglars.
If thin metal pipes were used as the frame during the installation of the gate, then to install the mortise lock, it is required to weld the box from a steel sheet 3 mm thick. Its dimensions should correspond to the dimensions of the castle and leave a minimum clearance between the case and the walls.
On the post from the side of the gate, select the hole for the bolt, drill holes for the mounting screws. It is best if they are located outside the box, otherwise there will be problems with turning the nuts on the threads of the screws. On both sides of the box, you will need to make a selection of turnkey grooves or for the entire core.
The counterpart is attached to the gate post, if desired, the groove for the crossbar can be selected directly in it. This option to install a mortise lock cannot be called very neat, but the main drawback is that the lock mechanism will be unprotected from precipitation.
Special mortise locks for corrugated gates
The most civilized option will be the purchase and installation of a special mortise lock for gates from corrugated board. The thickness of this model is minimal and allows you to install the lock in a profiled pipe measuring 40X50 mm. The installation of such a locking device does not require the use of a welding machine, it is very simple to do it yourself.
After marking at the end of the gate, a groove is made under the body. Using a grinder, two vertical incisions are made and a third - diagonally of the rectangle. The resulting triangles are bent outward and cut, the edges are aligned with a file. A drill is required to drill holes for the core and screws.
To accurately mark the counterpart of the lock, you can lubricate the bolt with any thick dye, for example, toothpaste or putty, by closing the gate, turn the key in the lock - at the place where you need to make a groove for the bolt, a distinct print of it will appear. After selecting all the holes, you will need to fix all the parts of the lock with screws.
