Balcony: what is it for?

The answer to the question of why a person needs a balcony in an apartment can be very diverse. Someone needs a balcony only to enjoy the views, breathe the air and decorate it with flowers in flowerpots. Someone, on the contrary, very pragmatically approaches the presence of a useful area in their apartment and, at least, dries the laundry on the open balcony or, quite seriously approaching the development of this territory, heats the balcony and uses it as a full room.
But, in order to use your balcony so varied, you need one indispensable condition: it must be dry on the balcony. That is, it is mandatory to have a roof or a visor, this especially applies to balconies located on the last floors of multi-storey buildings, or balconies of houses located, on a whim of the architect, with individual elements throughout the facade of the house that will keep the balcony at least dry and clean.

So what to do if there is a balcony, but it does not have a roof? Need to do it!

Landscaping the balcony: roof

To begin with, we will determine what a visor is, and what is a roof on a balcony.

Visor   it is a roof, on a frame, but without insulation in one layer of roofing material.

Balcony roof   this is already a more complete construction, which consists of a frame, with the outer part covered with roofing material, with internal decorative panels, and in the middle with heat-insulating material.

Before you begin any work, as well as the installation of a roof on the balcony, you need to know which roof we want, ideally, and which roof we can afford on this particular balcony.
  All this because the roof on the balcony is a fairly serious change in the appearance of the building’s facade, requiring special permissions and design documentation. And that’s all, in turn, extra time and money, and, by the way, not the fact that everything will turn out the way you want. But this is a different story.

  Now, the main thing is to foresee everything correctly, as the pitched roof is an ideal option for the roof of the balcony, but there are several types and methods of installing these pitched roofs for balconies:

- device of the roof of the balcony, depending on the type of roof of the main building (especially important if the roof is on the balcony of the last floor) of the house:

• With the sloping roof of the main building, the roof of the balcony itself will be slightly lower than the main one, due to which there will be an overlap of the roof planes: the probability of leakage near the wall in this case is minimal. Although it requires the organization of an apron.
• With a flat roof of the main building, special attention should be paid to the organization of the apron: an additional bent sheet of the material of the main roof or stainless steel, sheet metal, which ensures maximum contact of the roof with the wall of the building.

• The cantilever design of the roof is used if it is necessary to erect only a visor, and the balcony itself cannot be glazed and insulated.
• The cantilever-supporting structure is a prerequisite for the organization of the roof of the balcony, which will subsequently be glazed and possibly insulated.

But, with any type of roof frame construction on the balcony, the frame itself must be made of metal elements: corners, pipes bent, welded or twisted together into a single solid structure.

• If the balcony is not planned to be insulated, and it will be used for decorative and aesthetic purposes, then the roof is made of materials such as, for example, corrugated board, polycarbonate, without insulation.

• If the balcony is glazed and insulated, then the use of polycarbonate, although permissible, is not advisable. The corrugated board, metal tile will look much more practical.

• Pitched, moreover, the number of slopes, as well as the angle of the roof, can be different.

How to make a roof on the balcony
