How to make a gazebo from a log on a personal plot with your own hands
Arbor is a mandatory attribute of almost any well-groomed area of a country house or cottage. At the same time, you can build a gazebo from almost any material at hand, but the wooden building will look the most stylish and beautiful. We will talk about the features of building a gazebo with our own hands from a log in this article.

Start of construction
Before starting any construction, we must decide on some nuances. For example, where will our gazebo stand, what size will it be, what functions will it perform. A gazebo made of logs can be equipped taking into account the presence of children in the family, or it can contain a barbecue. All these nuances must be taken into account when designing our gazebo. In addition, when designing a gazebo, you need to know that:
- the height of an ordinary gazebo should not be less than 2.30 meters;
- if you are planning a large gazebo, with a diameter of more than 3 meters, it is best to build it with a hexagon;
- the material for the roof of the gazebo should be refractory and preferably light;
- the roof of the gazebo should have a good slope, so that in the future it would not be necessary to waterproof it;
- a glazed arbor will cost you 35% more.
At the design stage, you must also determine exactly what material the arbor will be built from. Since we are considering the stages of construction of the gazebo exactly from wood, let's talk a little about the advantages of this material.
So, arbors for giving from a log have an aesthetic appearance pleasant to a look which will certainly please your look for many years. In addition, buildings made of such material will be environmentally friendly, and almost all owners of private houses and summer cottages are striving for this. The microclimate inside the gazebo will always be maintained at a healthy level, since the wood is not metal and it breathes. Also, wood has better thermal insulation performance than, for example, brick or concrete, the thermal insulation properties of which are five times less. The wooden structure does not need additional cladding or insulation, it is enough just to cover it with a special varnish for the log.
Examples of projects of a gazebo from a log
What your gazebo will be entirely depends on your desires and fantasies. It can be a small arbor with an unusual roof or a large wooden arbor with barbecue and decorated with carvings. In the same article, we will consider two projects of a gazebo made of logs.
The first example presents a project of a cozy small gazebo, the main highlight of which is an unusual double four-pitched roof. It is worth noting that each gazebo should have some kind of original element, whether it be a roof or a carving. With such an element, your gazebo will become a real decoration of the yard.
You can put such a gazebo near the house, near the summer kitchen or in the garden. This project presents a gazebo with an area of 5x5 meters. If you want a normal floor in the gazebo, it’s worth equipping the foundation. In this case, the strip foundation on piles of a monolithic type, measuring 500-300 millimeters, is perfect. As a material for the walls, you can use a pine or spruce logs with a diameter of 220-280 millimeters. For the roof of the roof choose a tile, euro slate or roofing material. The floor can be equipped on logs or soil, however, in any case, at the end it will be necessary to process the boards against mold and decay.
The second example of a project of a gazebo from a rectangular log is a gazebo with openwork carvings. The area of the proposed gazebo is 3.5-7 m., Height 3.8 m.
The gazebo can be placed on cement blocks with sand or a pillow of crushed stone, as well as on a concrete strip foundation. The base can be finished with tiles or stone. The walls are erected from logs with a diameter of 16-22 mm. As a roofing material, metal or wooden tiles can be used.
To begin the construction of the gazebo, like any other structure, it should begin with the arrangement of the foundation.
Foundation for gazebo
To ensure the reliability of the structure and the durability of our gazebo from the log, it is necessary to equip the foundation. Since we are talking about lightweight construction, it is possible to lay a columnar foundation, as well as strip or pile.
To properly lay the columnar foundation, you must first determine one of the corners of the facade of the building and mark this place, for example, driving a peg. Further from this peg we must measure the width of the front wall and note again. Similarly, other angles must be designated. The final bar marking check diagonally. In this case, the diagonals must intersect at right angles, otherwise the marking is done incorrectly.
Arranging this type of foundation will cost much less, and it will take much less time to fill it. In each of the dug holes, it is necessary to pour a layer of crushed stone, and then pour concrete.
In the case of the strip foundation, it is also necessary to make markings and indicate the line along which the walls will be erected. Then they dig a trench with a depth of 0.4-0.5 m and a width of 30 cm. When the preparatory work is completed, crushed stone or sand should be poured onto the bottom of the trench, after which this layer is leveled and compacted. So that when pouring, the concrete is distributed evenly, it is advisable to install a wooden formwork inside the trench.
Construction of the walls of the gazebo
For the walls of the gazebo, you can choose any material, however, it will have the most colorful look if you use a log. You can do the preparation of the future building material yourself, but in this case, you just can not do without the help of a carpenter. Therefore, it is recommended to purchase ready-made bars. At the same time, it is recommended to pay attention to coniferous wood, since it contains natural resins that prevent rotting of the tree in negative weather conditions.
Be sure to pay attention to the quality of the selected wood. In no case should there be traces of fungus, cracks or dents on it. Also, the tree must be dry, not damp.
By choosing a finished beam, you will greatly facilitate your further work on the erection of the walls of the gazebo, which will be reduced to folding the logs in the likeness of a puzzle. Ease of installation is provided by the presence of grooves in the logs, but if they are not there, then you have to make them yourself with a paper stencil and a jigsaw. Also, when installing the gazebo, be sure to remember that when erecting large buildings, it is necessary to use a connection of logs with nails.
In order to create support for the future roof, we need to install the vertical posts in the corners of the arbor, we need to be long and reliably strengthen them. This is desirable to do even at the stage of construction of the foundation. At the top and bottom of the racks, you will also have to build a harness to hold the entire structure together. By the way, the floor of the gazebo, as a rule, fits exactly on the lower harness.
After arranging the harness, the logs should be laid out on the base one by one, and then mark the cut lines. When cutting with a groove, be extremely careful, since it is desirable that the logs lie tightly on each other. After the walls of our gazebo are installed, you can start laying the floor. In the end, be sure to remember to treat the entire structure with an antiseptic.
Arbor roof arrangement
If you are building a small arbor from logs, then the rafters can be made separately and a ready-made structure can be installed. In this case, between the rafters and corners, in no case should there be a gap, and in the places of fastening all parts must be connected as securely as possible. Next, we make the crate from the boards. If you plan to use metal roofing or corrugated board as the roofing material, then the step of the crate should be 20-30 centimeters, and in the case of using soft tiles, the base must be made solid. The final touch is the arrangement of waterproofing and installation of the finish coating.
That's all, our log arbor is ready. It remains only to process the inner surface with varnish or wax, as well as install furniture.
