The technology of installing flexible tiles, consider installing flexible tiles in stages, how to do it right
At the roofing stage, as well as at any other stage of construction, it is very important to do everything right, since the slightest mistake can cost you not only time spent, but also money. In order to avoid mistakes during the installation of the coating, it is necessary to adhere to a certain technology, which, first of all, depends on what material you prefer. In this article we will talk about a material for roofing, such as flexible tiles. We will tell you about its features and, of course, about the technology of installing flexible bituminous tiles.

What is flexible tile
Today, one of the most popular building materials for roofing is flexible roof tiles. Such a tile is created on the basis of fiberglass or fiberglass. Modified or oxidized bitumen is applied on either side of the substrate. To give an aesthetic appearance, mineral chips are applied to the front side of the finished tile. In addition to its decorative appearance, mineral chips make the tile more protected from ultraviolet rays and various climatic influences. Self-adhesive modified bitumen is applied to the underside of the tile, which is protected by a silicone film.
Flexible tiles have a number of advantages, including:
- low weight (only 8-11 kg / m2);
- ease of installation, which is provided by special adhesive joints;
- aesthetic appearance;
- low fire hazard of the roof;
- resistance to temperature changes and mechanical damage.
Before moving on to the intricacies of installing flexible tiles, I would like to note that the minimum slope of the roof should be about 12 degrees, otherwise it is not recommended to use this roofing material. Also, if the slope of your roof is 12-18 degrees, a special lining carpet is laid under the flexible tile. As for the maximum slope, there are no restrictions, since the installation of flexible tiles is possible even on vertical sections of the walls that are adjacent to the roofs.
We prepare the basis for laying flexible tiles
As a rule, OSB plates, boards or plywood are used as the basis for shingles.
If you chose boards as the basis, then it is best to give preference to cleanly cut or grooved boards with a minimum width of 15 cm. The gap between the boards should be 5 millimeters.
For the basis of plywood, it is necessary to foresee the distance between the rafters. Everything should be done in such a way that the edges of the plywood sheets fall precisely on the rafters. Depending on the distance between the rafters, the thickness of the boards themselves and plywood is also chosen.
The foundation before laying the bituminous tiles must be treated with refractory substances and an antifungal agent. In doing so, make sure that the base is level.
In fact, installing flexible Shinglas tiles is not so difficult. The main thing is to follow a specific plan of action. So, first of all, it is necessary to prepare the rafter system, and then lay the vapor barrier and heat insulation layers. Next, the installation of the lathing and metal fixing strips is carried out and only after that it is possible to mount the lining layer under the tile.
As a lining layer, as a rule, a roofing carpet is used, which is laid on the end parts of the roof, skates and eaves.
If the slope is less than 1: 3, then it is recommended to lay the roofing carpet over the entire roof area.
The installation of the lining layer is made from the bottom up, the overlap should be at least 10 centimeters. To fix the edges of the roofing carpet, nails are used, which are hammered every 20 centimeters. For more reliable sealing glue is used.
Before proceeding with the installation of flexible tiles, it is also necessary to install cornices.
Basics
Installation of flexible tiles with their own hands begins from the middle line with indentation left and right, from bottom to top. In principle, installing a flexible tile will be much easier if you previously mark the roof. This is due to the fact that due to the small size of the shingles, curvature of the rows quite often occurs.
To mark the roof from top to bottom across the ramp, draw two straight parallel lines at a distance of 500 millimeters. These lines will provide horizontal displacement of the flexible tile elements relative to each other. Since the installation of flexible tiles will be carried out in rows, a mass of perpendiculars with a step of 250 millimeters will also have to be added to these parallel lines. It is with respect to these perpendiculars that the shingles will fit.
Flexible tile mounting technology
Mount shingles must begin with the bottom of the roof slope. A special self-adhesive strip is glued to the first row, or it can be laid with flexible tiles only upside down. In this case, the first row of shingle is laid without taking into account the markings, relative to the roof slope. Next, the rows are laid in accordance with the markup.
Flexible tiles are mounted quite easily thanks to a special self-adhesive base. However, I would like to draw your attention here, but the fact that it is not worth hoping for this foundation alone, since it is not enough. In this regard, it is recommended to use also rough or screw nails, four pieces for each shingle. You need to use them at the edges and in the middle of each tile.
Each next row of flexible tiles should be laid with a displacement of half a millimeter, so that the petals of each stacked row fall between the petals of the previous row.
Laying flexible tiles on the valleys and the ridge
Laying tiles on skates can be done in two ways.
The first way is an open gutter. In this case, use chalk to mark two lines from the ridge to the slopes. In this case, the distance between the lines at the ridge should be 7.5 centimeters in different directions from the axis of the valley. Below these lines should diverge by a centimeter through each meter of the roof. When installing shingles, they will need to be trimmed clearly along these lines. Next, in the upper row, you need to cut a corner with which the water flowing along the roof will be sent to the valley.
The second way is a closed chute. In this case, the shingles that are mounted on the gutter do not need to be trimmed, but attached on the other side of the gutter with fasteners and glue. Only the shingles of the top row, which is adjacent to the ridge, need to be trimmed. Thus, the gutter will be securely covered and will not leak over time.
That's all. As you can see, there are absolutely no difficulties in installing flexible tiles with your own hands. The main thing is to take this task with full responsibility and remember that the laying of tiles should be performed with maximum tightness, since the roof will protect your entire house from water in the future.
