How did the bath broom come about?
It is worth noting that it is with the use of the broom in the bath that the load on the body increases - the broom plays the role of a massager, in addition, its use helps to increase the humidity in the steam room. In the sauna, everything happens differently. Here, the temperature is much higher and the air is completely dry. Being in such a room, the human body does not have the ability to adequately accept the additional load. Spent time in the sauna using a broom, obviously will not be useful and may even cause irreparable damage to the body. Therefore, the use of a broom in the sauna is strictly prohibited.
In the baths you can use completely different brooms. The most famous and often used: linden, wormwood, bird cherry, oak, nettle, eucalyptus, maple, coniferous, birch.
There are special rules for using brooms in the bath: at the time of steaming and the massage itself, to ensure maximum safety, tight gloves, mittens made of wool or gauntlets made of tarpaulin are worn on the hands; they will protect your hands from possible scalding when steaming a broom, and also protect against scratches and abrasions during soaring.
The concept of brooms for a bath appeared in time immemorial, when natural factors acted as pagan cults: earth, sun, air, the same special relation to plants. They were used in different spheres of life of primitive man, served as a source of material for housing construction, their leaves and fruits were eaten, they created all kinds of infusions, ointments, decoctions with healing properties that help get rid of various ailments.
Numerous mistakes in the use of medicinal plants and further testing of their qualities have shown that the most effective healing of herbs occurs precisely during the adoption of bath procedures. From healers and healers, the tradition went to use a broom from plants containing useful and healing trace elements in the bathhouse.
The principle of the bath broom
As already mentioned, with the help of a broom in the bath there is a relaxing and healing massage. During such a session, the muscles of the body relax, blood circulation throughout the body increases and the processes associated with metabolism improve.
In addition, fragments of dead and roughened skin are removed from the body. Well-steamed plant leaves absorb substances released during the metabolic process, which actively occurs in the steam room. In other words, there is an instant cleansing of the whole body from toxic substances released with sweat.
When to harvest brooms for a bath
As you know, the best time to collect herbs is spring and the beginning of summer. The most tangible healing effect is given by medicinal plants collected on the Trinity. It is during this period that the greatest number of useful trace elements are collected in foliage. Cutting the stem should be done on a nice, dry day, while the sun is moving towards sunset. On the stems cut off in the morning, moisture may remain in the form of dew residues or raindrops. This fact will definitely lead to darkening and falling of foliage on cut stems. For the same reason, rinsing the broom after collecting the stems is not recommended. You should only park it when it is planned to be used.
In order to get the right broom for the bath, the stems and branches for it are cut only from healthy trees or shrubs. Before cutting, it is necessary to inspect the entire bush or tree and only after making sure that there is no damage in the form of painful formations on the whole plant, start harvesting. Directly the cut itself is made as accurately as possible with a pruner or a sharp knife.
Cut branches should be about 50 centimeters long. After that they need to be sorted. That part of the branches, which will be the handle of a broom, must be cleaned of leaves and side branches. Then you can start tying: in pairs with wire, the general press - with twine. In this form, preserving the workpiece will be much easier. The amount of source material and its size directly depend on personal needs and desires. The main thing to remember here is that the broom should be suitable for everyone individually (both by weight and size).
A note for beginners - when wet, the bath broom increases in weight by almost 2 times.
How to dry bath brooms
Store and dry the blanks in the room:
- which has no drafts,
- which keeps a constant cool temperature,
- in which there is a roof.
Otherwise, the sun's rays entering the room will lead to yellowing of the foliage, and eventually to its decline.
How to knit bath brooms
Right before use, pre-assembled branches are correctly positioned. This is done as follows: they take the source material and fold it in such a way that as a result a bundle is obtained, inside of which the thickest branches will be located, and on the outside - the thinnest, soft and flexible.
Then the bundle is fastened with a strong rope. Using an ax or knife, the broom handle is put in order, removing unnecessary serrated and tuberous ends. The cleaned end of the broom should be so long that two human palms can rest comfortably on it.
A handle of just such a length will be as comfortable as possible for holding and hovering. In those cases when it was not possible for any reason to make a smooth handle, it is tightly wrapped with a thick rope. Only in this case it will be possible to avoid scratches and abrasions on the hands while holding a broom. Do not forget about mittens and gloves, which will also help prevent hand injuries.
Harvesting bath brooms with fresh leaves
Freshly cut brooms, the leaves of which have not yet dried, should not be doused with hot water. They are placed for several minutes under the ceiling of the steam room. Young foliage will be enough, young leaves are still full of their own moisture. When soaring with a recently cut broom, the body will receive a stronger healing effect, while the person will be able to fully enjoy the effect of aromatherapy.
Broom for a bath, types
There are many types of bath brooms. In order to determine which particular species will be most acceptable for one or another person, it is necessary to carefully study the useful and healing properties of trees and medicinal plants.
birch broom
The most commonly used species is a birch broom. It is this tree that logically takes the first place in the list of popularity, everyone knows that from time immemorial birch has been a special account of folk doctors. Today's medicine also widely uses the healing properties of birch:
- to treat colds
- to get rid of kidney failure,
- as an effective decongestant,
- like a strong disinfectant,
- like a sweatshirt
- as a means of strengthening the whole body as a whole.
Since birch trees are found quite often, problems with the harvesting of birch brooms should not arise. The main advantage of the birch twigs in the steam room is: small and soft foliage that freely glides over the body and positive healing characteristics suitable for almost every organism.
When cutting brooms for a bath from birch branches, young foliage that appears on the trees will tell. This period falls approximately in the middle of May. Around this time, the leaves had already grown to suitable dimensions and gained the maximum amount of juice. If for some reason at this time the opportunity to make blanks for a birch broom was missed, then later cut branches is no longer worth it. After a certain cutting time has elapsed, the birch branches in the steam room will not have a full therapeutic effect, and the leaves on such branches will soon fall off.
Using a birch broom in a steam room will require skill and experience. The thing is that young birch branches are flexible and long. To quickly adapt to its use, several oak branches are inserted in the middle of the broom. They will add the missing stiffness and density to the birch broom. An oak supplement will not worsen the positive result of soaring with a birch broom; on the contrary, it will contribute a part of its healing properties.
juniper broom
Naturally, you can make such a broom by collecting branches from a juniper bush. Juniper foliage collected in early summer contains the maximum amount of resins that stand out under the influence of steam contribute to the healing of the body. Cut branches from the bush should be carefully, from different bushes, so as not to harm the plant. From juniper branches:
- knit brooms
- they are included in mixed brooms,
- they line the floor in the steam room.
To make the workpieces suitable for use as a bath broom, they should be steamed for half an hour with boiling water.
oak brooms
Along with birch counterparts, oak brooms are a classic option. Oak twigs are harvested at the end of summer; only young shoots are used for this.
Oak brooms:
- ideal for people with oily skin,
- they help in the treatment of hypertension,
- the tannins contained in them perfectly cleanse the skin and help in the treatment of skin diseases.
nettle brooms
This option of a broom contributes to the overall healing of the body. Do not be afraid that nettles will burn the skin - with proper preparation, this option is excluded. Nettle is harvested in May-June, when the branches are still young. It is possible to produce raw materials only in ecologically safe areas, in no case within the boundaries of large cities or along highways.
Nettle broom:
- will have a tonic effect on the body,
- relieve muscle and joint pain,
- help to cope with sciatica.
The preparation of the broom for the bath procedure consists in two to three-fold immersion of it alternately in boiling water and cold water.
eucalyptus brooms
The procurement of raw materials for such brooms is carried out in the Caucasus; in Russia it will not be difficult to find and buy such a broom. Treated with eucalyptus broom from:
- colds and tonsillitis,
- female diseases.
The aroma of eucalyptus has a tonic effect on the body, you can use eucalyptus branches not only in the bath, but also for inhalation at home.
wormwood broom
