We determine the right place for the construction of a tennis court with our own hands
To choose a suitable place for the construction of the court, it should be noted that the size of the tennis court is not small, according to the European standard - 18x36 m, for beginner athletes or children to play - 16x32 or 17x34 m. But building a court with such dimensions is not practical, the players gain experience, the children grow up It’s still necessary to finish building the site, but it will be problematic to do this.
Fencing and lighting of the court, protection from rain and cold
Comfortable use of the site will require the construction of a fence around it. To do this, between the installed supports they stretch the mesh netting, its height should be at least 3-4 m. If the means allow, then instead of the mesh they pull special anti-wind screens.
In order to be able to operate the site in the evening, the installation of lamps is required. They are located at a height of 6 to 8 m, the power of each of them must be at least 200 W, a total of 6 to 10 lamps will be needed.
Ideally, it is recommended that the court be provided with a protective shelter, then it will be possible to play on it regardless of the rain, and if after installing the frame structures and installing the sandwich panels the court will be equipped with a heating system, then it can be operated year-round.
Ground coat for court
The most important part of the structure is the cover, on which, in fact, the game will take place. It is it that affects the quality of the game. But no matter which coating option is chosen, first of all, it will be necessary to prepare the site: level the soil, depending on the chosen coating, prepare a pillow base for it - it should provide moisture removal.
There are several coating options for the court. The cheapest of them is soil. Among its advantages should be noted:
- relatively low cost
- low risk of injury,
- such a coating does not create increased loads on the spine and joints of the legs,
- the ability to quickly build a tennis court with your own hands.
Significant disadvantages of the soil option will be:
- slow drying of the area after rain,
- the need for special processing of the field after the game,
- the need to clean the area from foliage and other debris,
- the need for restoration after wintering,
- the need for watering for at least 5 minutes in hot weather,
- the possibility of grass sprouting on the court, the care of which is carried out in violation of the recommendations.
Soil pads are subject to annual repairs, for this you need a mixture of crushed marble and granite, sand (tennis) in an amount of 3 to 5 tons. For the construction of a standard court you will need about 40 tons of tennis tennis, during compaction of which a layer about 4 cm thick should be formed. Care the site must be carried out in such a way that it is neither waterlogged nor dry.
Grass cover
A tennis court may involve the use of grass. But most often this option is used for professional sites - lawn care is too complicated, maintaining it in proper form is affordable for professionals. The advantages of a lawn cover include:
- its aesthetic appearance
- low risk of injury.
The disadvantage, as already mentioned, is the need for qualified care. Inadequate grass can cause a bad bounce of the ball, which will negatively affect the parameters of the game.
Carpet covering
A more acceptable option when building a tennis court in the country may be artificial grass. The advantages of such a coating:
- ease of care
- the ability to quickly create a quality field for the game.
There are two varieties of artificial grass for the court: semi-filling and filling. The length of the pile on the filling - 20 mm, on the semi-filling - 10 mm. Artificial grass is a latex base with artificial fibers woven into it. After laying such a lawn, it will need to be covered with quartz sand.
An artificial turf on the court will require moisture, over time the sand will need to be leveled or poured. With excessive moisture, the artificial cover will be slippery.
The design of the carpeted tennis court involves the construction of a solid foundation. Its arrangement should be taken seriously - poor-quality work can spoil the result, and considerable funds will be spent on the purchase of carpet. The base should have a thickness of about 60 cm, of which 45 cm of gravel and sand and 15 cm of concrete. If the soil is strong enough, the backfill layer may have a smaller thickness. Tamping backfill layers is recommended with a construction roller. To ensure drainage, a slight tilt to the short side of the court will be required. If construction is done by professionals, then the design is equipped with gutters for water drainage.
Hard and plastic court coating
In the construction of sports grounds, hard coverings are often used, which is distinguished by a wide color gamut, suitable for use on outdoor and indoor types of playgrounds. Lay it on the prepared asphalted or concrete site. Depending on the number of layers laid, the coating can be hard (3-4 layers) or safe (7 layers or more).
If the foundation is made in accordance with the recommendations, then you can operate the hard for more than 10 years, the coating does not require special care. Residual moisture after rain is removed with a rubber mop. The construction of such a court will take about 2-3 months.
A simpler assembly will require a plastic coating acceptable for amateur courts. It is assembled from ready-made modules in a fairly short time. Installation is carried out on a concrete screed. Leaving such a court is very simple. But when buying a plastic coating, you should ask about the warranty period for its operation - it may be sensitive to temperature extremes.
Do-it-yourself tennis court device in the country
If you have decided on the independent construction of the court, then you should adhere to the recommendations given by experienced builders. Among the important aspects of construction, the following can be distinguished. The construction of the court may take from two to 4 weeks, or even more, depending on the type of coating chosen.
Will need to prepare:
- plot of appropriate size
- materials for the construction of the base and coverage of the site,
- net or anti-wind screens for fencing, poles for their installation,
- lights and racks for their installation,
- skating rink, construction tools.
To prevent sun rays from dazzling the players, the court should be placed from north to south. The dimensions of the court should correspond to the standard ones, if the structure is planned exclusively for amateur classes, then its dimensions can be increased up to 20x40 m. The quality of the game will depend on the density of the surface of the court.
The area should be divided by a grid trimmed on the upper edge with a white edging, for rigidity, a cable is inserted into it.
Pits for fence posts are dug by a depth of about 1 m, having installed poles made of concrete. The height of the posts should correspond to the height of the grid. If necessary, the posts are made removable, for this, glasses are concreted in the marked places, pipes will be installed in them.
For the construction of the foundation, a excavation should be made with a depth of at least 25 cm, at its bottom, drainage ditches should be made and covered with rubble. According to the prepared base, a layer of crushed stone should be poured with a fraction of 5 cm, the layer thickness should be 10 cm, rolled it, filled with water. The next will be a screening layer with a fraction of 2-5 cm, a thickness of 13 cm. This layer is also rammed with a roller.
Then a 5-centimeter layer of the mixture is poured, consisting of 70% granite screenings, 15% powdery clay and 15% soil. Based on 1 cubic meter of the mixture, you can add 0.5 kg of salt to improve the moisture capacity.
To give the mixture a bright shade, tuff can be added to it. Then the surface is covered with a thin layer of sand, rolled off, the excess sand is swept away with a brush. According to the plan, lines are marked with white lines with a thickness of 5 cm, end - 10 cm.
Supports for fencing and mesh tension are painted with green paint.
For comfortable operation of the court you will also need:
- ball baskets, ball collector, tennis gun,
- special brushes for combing the carpet,
- a mop to remove water from the hard surface,
- device for cleaning markings.
Having knocked down a total, we can conclude that the construction of a tennis court in the country will require considerable financial costs and time. But if you have the desire and willingness to work hard, you can get an excellent result - a comfortable, well-equipped place for outdoor activities and sports training for the whole family.
