We plant grapes, how to plant grapes in spring, useful tips
Often the first experience of planting grapes is unsuccessful. This is mainly expressed in a small amount of yield or in a sluggish flow of plant development. Such occasions happen even for those gardeners who, before planting, carefully read the relevant literature that tells all about seedlings and their care.

What soil can you grow grapes on
The process of breeding grapes is laborious and complex. People with some experience in this matter know that a positive landing result directly depends on the depth of the trench. In addition to this, beginners should know that the recommendations in the literature are not always acceptable for this or that region, because the quality indicators of the soil are different everywhere.
For example, for the normal course of the process of growing grapes and obtaining a generous harvest from it, first of all, planting seedlings on fertile soil to a certain depth will be needed, if the soil has a large clay capacity, then neither the depth of the trench, nor the planting as a whole make any sense.
The key to successful cultivation is planting grape seedlings in light soil in a well-sun-heated area.
In very rare cases, it is possible to plant a vineyard on clay, well-fertilized soil. But it’s worth immediately clarifying that seedlings will bear fruit and actively develop only a few years. Then the earth will be depleted and this fact will have a very negative effect on all plant life processes.
We must not forget that the plant does not tolerate wetlands:
- if the depth of groundwater is less than 1 m - you will need to increase the soil layer to 1.5 m,
- in case of storm water stagnation at the site in the autumn and spring period, it will be necessary to equip a high-quality drainage system.
Grapes from cuttings
Breeding vineyards with cuttings is one of the most commonly used and not expensive ways.
This method is designed for the fact that the owner of the garden plot independently, without additional costs for the purchase of seedlings (which is not cheap in our time), receives by cutting the cuttings from an already grown bush. In order for the cuttings to begin to grow, and in the future, to bear fruit, they must be properly prepared.
The procurement process is carried out only in the autumn period. For grape cuttings, those shoots that have grown from last year's vines are more suitable. For example, shoots from:
- stepsons,
- central
- extra-axillary and replacement kidneys.
Cut off shoots need to be well soaked. In addition to this, it is very important to prevent the appearance of mold on cuttings and their drying. The best place to store material for planting is the basement.
There is also a method that provides spring cutting shoots for cuttings. It is used extremely rarely, since shoots cut in the spring have a low percentage of vitality.
How to plant grapes with cuttings
Planting grape seedlings and cuttings should be done in the spring. Landing in all regions is carried out according to the same scheme:
- carefully prepared material for planting,
- pre-selected landing site is being prepared: a trench is dug up, moistened and fertilized,
- the start of planting can only begin after the air temperature for several days is not lower than +10 degrees,
- only those cuttings and seedlings are to be planted, the root system of which is not affected by diseases, is well developed and has a length of at least 3 cm,
- just before lowering the cuttings into the trench, you need to pour a bucket of hot water into it (this will create the most favorable conditions conducive to quick and high-quality rooting.
Experts advise gardeners to pay attention to the type of soil into which grapes are planted. In cases where the soil is a type of chernozem, it needs to be lightened, that is, aeration and water permeability should be improved. The best option for creating such relief is to add sand and gravel to the soil.
Compliance and implementation of all points of the above scheme, in the future will give the owner the opportunity to enjoy the appearance of a strong and well-developed plant, as well as the taste of grapes grown in his own hands.

How to plant grapes correctly
It is possible to lay grape seedlings in the ground both at an angle and vertically. Each gardener chooses the most suitable method for himself. Having chosen a vertical landing, special attention should be paid to the root system of the plant. Roots located above the second node must be removed.
With an inclined landing option, the root system is left unchanged. The only condition for this option is that the root should not exceed 10 cm in length. All that exceeds this threshold is cut off. The inclined version involves lowering the seedling trunk under the ground. Seedling sprouts, in this case, are brought to the surface of the earth and thus form the ground stem system of planting material.
Mostly such planting options are used for planting single plants. They are also suitable for planting several plants in a trench. When planting more than one plant, you need to worry about maintaining a certain distance between the seedlings, allowing trouble-free and full-fledged development of an ever-growing root.
What grapes to plant: choose varieties by maturity
Quite often, beginning amateur gardeners are surprised at the existing variety of grape varieties.
Firstly, you need to know that all grape varieties are divided by the ripening time of clusters:
- late
- early
- mid-early
- very early.
In addition, each region involves planting varieties suitable for a particular climate. For example, in regions where the temperature drops significantly in August and autumn weather begins, it makes no sense to plant varieties belonging to late and mid-season. These varieties will practically have no time for full ripening of the crop.
In regions where the warm number of months in a year does not exceed 4-5 (the warm part of spring and summer), early varieties should be planted. Seedlings of such varieties will have a sufficiently warm time period for the full ripening of the crop. Early varieties planned for planting in such regions should have a high degree of frost resistance. Only such representatives of grape varieties will be able to endure the harsh winter climatic conditions of these regions without pain and problem.
Those wishing to plant a vineyard on their site, experts advise to purchase cuttings and seedlings in specialized stores in the same region or from more experienced winegrowers living in the same climatic zone. This beginning of viticulture will serve as a guarantee that plants will take root and will actively bear fruit.
It makes no sense to shop for planting material in other countries or in cities located in a different climate zone. Basically, seedlings and cuttings purchased in this way do not take root in a new place, and if they take root, they are guaranteed to be weak in growth and less productive.
For beginners, the ideal way to start cultivating a vineyard is to buy and plant early varieties. These varieties are well established in almost any region. An ideal option would be a variety called Arcadia. This is a white grape variety, famous for its high degree of yield.
We watch a video about an easy-to-care, but very productive variety of Arcadia:
In the area reserved for the vineyard, you can simultaneously plant several varieties. The main thing is to observe the correctness of the schematic landing. It is very important to maintain the necessary distance between seedlings of different varieties and thus avoid pollination with honey. Owners of small land plots should not get involved in a wide variety of grape varieties. To avoid pollination of different varieties among themselves, it makes sense to plant only a few and at the same time place them in different parts of the site.
The best varieties for making wine
If the gardener plans to make homemade grape wine, then it is worth focusing on the following varieties: Regent, Muscat, Alpha and others. The fruits of the recommended grapes have both white and brown color, so the wine can be made both red and white.

In cases where the grape harvest is planned to be used only to satisfy taste needs, attention should be paid to other varieties:
- Delight,
- Friendship,
- Elegy and others.
These varieties are famous for their rather long shelf life. The main thing is to create the right conditions for the crop, which will ensure long-term preservation. Basically, storage takes place in a cool room - the cellar. It is here that grape brushes will retain their taste and appearance unchanged for several months.
