To cut a tree - do it right
Autumn is hot for gardeners - you have to harvest the crops grown for the season, prepare the garden for wintering, plant new young trees, clear the garden of unnecessary and damaged branches, often you have to remove old trees that, due to old age or illness, ceased to bear fruit and stopped their active development . Since the trees differ significantly in size, the problems that arise when you need to cut a tree can also be quite diverse. It is especially difficult to clean tall trees located near buildings, fences, power lines. In this case, you will need to know how to properly cut the tree, so as not to harm either yourself or your neighbors. In addition, successful tools will require quality tools such as saws and axes.

How to prepare for tree removal
You can cut trees manually or with a chainsaw, is it worth saying that the second option will greatly facilitate and speed up the process. But a chainsaw is a serious professional tool that requires special training and careful handling. Before you start working with a chainsaw, you should make sure that there is the proper amount of oil and gasoline in its tank, check the serviceability of the tool.
Also, experts recommend carefully inspecting the tree and analyze its condition:
determine if the tree is level, if not, then calculate the approximate angle of inclination,
choose the side in which it will be more convenient to fell the tree.
It will also be necessary to free the space around the tree from unnecessary objects, remove from it all protruding knots and fragments of branches, processes. On the tree itself, it is desirable to remove all protruding fragments that are lower than 1.5 m from the ground.
Experts recommend performing such an experience. Take an ax in your hands, place it parallel to the tree trunk, holding the ax on your outstretched arm, move away from the supposed dump to a distance that levels the ax's height with the size of the tree. At the place where you stop, the top of the sawn tree will most likely be located. There should not be any obstacles on the way to this point, in which case the side of the dump was chosen correctly. If there are problems with moving - it is advisable to remove the obstacle, if this is not possible - you will need to choose the other side of the fall.
How to cut a tree with a chainsaw
It should be clarified right away that the cutting technologies for large and small wood will be slightly different. In order for the process to go without problems, some nuances should be taken into account. Of course, the main thing is to know how to cut a tree in the right direction. Since it is easier to cut small trees, this procedure should be considered first. An incision is made from the side into which the tree is tilted. An upright tree begins to be cut from the side of the desired pile.
The depth of cut should be equal to half the diameter of the trunk. Then the file is made on the opposite side, they continue to saw until the tree falls. Trees are cut down, even small ones, not completely - first to a height of 1.3-1.5 m, then, guided by the same principles, they remove the remaining stump.
At the next stage, you will need to remove all branches from the sawn trunk. Start work with the most remote. Small ones will not create special problems, you can remove them from above. Larger ones should first be filed from above, then cut from the bottom, otherwise the file may be jammed.
Sawing of the trunk cleaned of branches is done from below, if you start to saw from the top, the file can be clamped. When cutting, do not allow the chain to touch the ground - this will cause a quick dulling of the saw.
Cut trees more than 50 cm thick
If the tree has a sufficiently large diameter, the order of work will be slightly different:
- first you need to choose the direction of the fall,
- then make a cut from the side of the proposed dump, its angle should be about 60 degrees to the base of the trunk, while the depth of cut should reach about a quarter of the diameter of the trunk,
- when making an incision, it is recommended to monitor the correct angle and position of the saw.
After performing the upper inclined cut, you will need to make a horizontal cut so that it converges with the upper. As a result, a side frame will be obtained.
Then, on the back of the tree, make a file located higher than the first. The file should be horizontal, it should not reach the first file about ten percent of the diameter. You will need to insert a feller blade or wedge into this file. Next, you should finish the trunk from the inside to the log house or dump it with a spatula.
Sometimes a different method is used: the wood is sawed through, then the file is moved in the opposite direction to the middle. Nedopil in this case is obtained from the side. The wedge is inserted into another incision, the tree is finished on the back side.
Removing branches is performed as follows: a branch is cut from above, then doped from below. If the branch is large, then they cut slightly stepping back from the trunk, the knot is removed later.
The correct order of cutting the trunk in this case will be as follows:
- the trunk is half cut from above,
- the saw is not removed, a wedge is driven in - this will prevent the possibility of clamping the barrel,
- finish the trunk to the end.
If the saw is still stuck, no attempt should be made to pull it out, it will be more rational to turn off the saw, force to press both sides of the cut trunk from below, the saw will be released when a certain effort is applied.
Removing trees in parts
A safer way is when a tree is deleted in parts. The use of this option will avoid damage to lawns or closely spaced plantations, each sawn part of the tree will slowly sink to the ground, its touchdown point can be adjusted. The disadvantage of this option is the high cost of time, the advantage is the ability to save lawns and flower beds, which is very important in a small area.
You can cut trees in this way even on city streets with busy traffic of cars and pedestrians, i.e. places where to lay down a tree in the usual way will not succeed.
A more complex and dangerous variation of this method is when the sawn parts are hung on closely spaced other trees.
They use it in the case when it is impossible to perform tree removal using other methods - the working person is on the tree and his life is in danger.
What rules should be followed to ensure a safe cut of trees
Among the basic safety rules, it should be mentioned that:
- gardening with a chainsaw implies a complete cessation of smoking, a fire hazard when cutting dry trees will be present in any case,
- getting started, you should make sure that there are no animals, children, strangers in the vicinity,
- the chainsaw should be held tight in its hands - falling it can lead to serious injuries,
- you should not try to saw wood vertically with the edge of the saw - in this position, the saw can be thrown away, and it will fly in your direction,
- you should protect yourself from possible chips or dust in your eyes, for this it is enough to wear safety glasses, wearing protective headphones you can protect yourself from excessive noise, it is also advisable to wear protective clothing.
Preliminary preparation of a detailed plan will not be superfluous. You should not show excessive self-confidence when doing such work, even if this is not your first experience. Statistics claim that injuries among experienced loggers are quite common, especially when they neglect safety procedures.
