Terrace board: what is it
Terrace board, as it is also called decking (which is translated from English as a deck), garden parquet or even deck board are all the names of the same material.
What kind of material is this?
Terrace board initially it is a board made of certain strong types of wood: larch, oak, sequoia or tropical tree species (for example, teak), which are least affected by water and moisture. Their cost is quite decent and not accessible to everyone, although such a board will last quite a long time, with proper constant care.
Therefore, with the emergence of demand for terrace planks in the CIS countries, local wood species, for example, pine, began to be used for its manufacture. This affected how it became more affordable on the price of decking (terrace board), but also on the quality to preserve and maintain the decorative and functional state of such a terrace board, it requires the use of protective varnishes, stains, impregnations that protect the wood from moisture, fungus, insects, two once a year (in spring and autumn). Unfortunately, such material does not differ in durability, even with constant careful care.
There was a period in the time of the active development of the use of plastic, the terrace board was made of PVC and had the name – polymer / plastic decking. This type of material is very practical, resistant to water and moisture, not subject to decay, but, unfortunately, in addition to simulating the appearance, it has nothing to do with wood, although at the moment it is also used in summer cottages, due to its reasonable price, simplicity installation and care, as well as durability.
To date, talking about a terrace board, most often composite deck board, made of wood-polymer composite material (wood flour (sawdust) and polymer (PVC) chips). These two components are mixed and under the influence of temperature and pressure, by pressing, a composite terrace board appears on the light. By the way, unlike a solid wood counterpart,
this material looks like this:
with cavities and holes, which, however, does not reduce its strength.
Composite decking is the best combination of the positive characteristics of PVC and wood:
- water and moisture resistance, as well as resistance to various kinds of bacteria, fungi and insects: at the same time, there is no need to carry out annual preventive treatments with impregnations and varnishes.
- resistance to fading in the sun: color changes are minimal.
- quick and easy installation, minimal compensation clearances.
- the presence of a huge selection of colors, board sizes, laying methods, as well as additional accessories: caps, corners.
- and most pleasantly, the affordability of prices with a guaranteed lifetime of such a terrace board is 50 years.
Terrace board: scope
The terrace board, thanks to all its positive qualities, but in particular: water and moisture resistance, has been used for a long time in Europe in the decoration of piers,
terraces
organization of garden paths.
We have a wide use of decking, as a decoration for swimming pools,
because decorating the pool with wood gives a small pond at the summer cottage not only visual and decorative significance, but also more comfortable to use: no cuts, abrasions, splintering, no falls (because the terrace board does not slip, even when wet), no dirt, because the terrace board is easy to clean, just rinse its surface with water from a hose.
A terrace board is also actively used, and as an option for interior decoration of the floor in unheated rooms (summer house, veranda)
or in rooms with high humidity (indoor pools, sauna).
Decking
Regardless of the composition of the terrace board: whether it is natural wood or a composite terrace board, the installation principles are the same in all cases:
- the terrace board, before laying, should lie down and acclimatize to the place where it will be laid. Usually, this is about a day. Such exposure of the material will avoid excessive deformation of the board after laying.
- the terrace board is laid on an even, dense, ideally concrete coating: usually, it is a concrete screed, with a layer of 10 cm or more, with a slope of 1% to the side of the pool for water drainage. Although it is possible to use compacted soil or loose and well-compacted crushed stone.
- all types of terrace boards are laid on the logs, located, depending on the recommendations of the manufacturer or the selected pattern of laying the boards in the following ways:
When laying in a straight line, the distance between the lags is not more than 40 cm,
When laying diagonally, the distance between the lags is reduced and the optimum is 20-25cm.
Logs are attached to the screed, with anchors.
- the terrace board is laid on the logs with the obligatory presence of a compensatory gap (to compensate for the temperature and humidity expansion of the board material, even if it is a composite version of the terrace board, during operation).
- All types of terrace boards can be laid both open and closed.
Although, the best option is a hidden method of installing a terrace board using special clip fasteners. When using this fixture, the board is not fixed permanently, but firmly (if necessary, it can be quickly dismantled without damage to the board itself: in case of inspection of communications, maintenance of built-in lamps and other equipment).
