Fountain: what is it? Types of fountains
Fountain, in the broad sense of the word, a phenomenon created by nature or artificially, which consists in the expiration, under the action of pressure, of water up or to the side.
It is on the basis of this definition, assuming the same structural and technical design: water supply under pressure up or to the side, all fountains can be divided into the following types, here are the most popular of them:
Running water fountains, representing an artificial permanent or temporary watercourse, imitating a stream, spring or water cascades and rapids.
Water cascades a fountain consisting of several waterfalls of small sizes, with artificially created, taking into account design wishes, step overflows of gravity water. The rapids are a fountain consisting of numerous breakwaters along the path of the water flow: the water moves along this channel with noise and foam, creating the feeling of a mountain stream.
Waterfall a fountain, which includes special nozzles and various planes of water overflow, in order to create the effect of its fall.
Fountain classic as a special case of landscape gardening this
- fountain sprayer: the usual view of the fountain when water of various thicknesses and heights is sprayed in separate streams up and to the sides.
- jet fountain bell: water is sprayed to the sides and down to create the effect of a bell.
- a foaming jet fountain (geyser) water in the jet mixes with air, creating the effect of a geyser and foaming.
- the floating fountain is designed to decorate the surface of natural reservoirs, and also performs the function of aerating water in standing reservoirs.
How to make a fountain: what is needed for this
Each type of fountain has its own design and placement features on the site.
Pure water
In order to get a beautiful, original, pleasing to the eye, working properly and bringing not only aesthetic, but also quite practical benefit in the gardening of a garden or personal plot, you need to consider the following: for all types of fountains water with clean water: dug up, with equipped bottom and edges (using a ready-made container or PVC film). For clean water, you need to calculate the possibilities of filtering it using special filters or purchase a pump for a fountain with an already built-in filter in case you have a fountain, in the classic sense.
If it is a waterfall or cascades, then simply changing the water periodically and cleaning the sludge tank with water (especially if such a fountain will be a habitat for fish and frogs.)
Fountain pump
You need a pump for an artificial fountain: its choice depends on what result you want to get as a result. The pump for the fountain, in the classical sense, requires a more powerful one, because more pressure is required to supply water up and to the sides. But, the fountain model is not the only indicator for choosing the right pump for it.
For the correct choice of a pump for a fountain, one must also take into account the following: pumps for decorative fountains (regardless of what kind and model of a fountain it is) are of 2 types: submersible
and superficial.
Submersible pumps are used only in water, and surface pumps are used on shore. Improper use of the pump could result in breakdown. In decorative fountains, submersible pumps (the optimal pump for a waterfall) are most often used: they are easier to maintain, more reliable, although their productivity and power are also lower. But, you can combine these two types of pumps (by purchasing an additional tee) for the fountains and get a multi-mode waterfall-fountain that works both in two modes (fountain and waterfall) at the same time, or separately.
If you want a small fountain (up to 1.2 m in height of the stream) or a waterfall (flow width not more than 1 m) in your summer cottage, then you should choose a low-voltage pump (24 V). For larger installations, a more powerful mains-powered pump will be required. When using both types of pumps, it is worth remembering that the hoses and pipes used in the fountain device reduce the performance of the pump.
Fountain decoration
As a decorative design of the fountain, absolutely any moisture- and waterproof material can act:
- stones, boulders located naturally and compositions laid out of them using cement-sand mortars,
- wooden ladders, sides and bridges,
- clay and glass objects,
and hygrophilous or aquatic plants, plus your imagination and a fountain in a summer cottage will be a real miracle!
