How to make a gate with your own hands, swing gates, sliding gates
In this article we will talk about how to make a gate with your own hands. The gate is the face of a summer cottage or a country house, they create an impression of the owner, and also perform a security task. I want to immediately note that this is not an easy matter. But if there are elementary skills in construction, then each person can do it.

Gate material
Regardless of whether it is a gate made of wood or iron, we first of all need to stock up with material for the manufacture of racks. Racks are best used in rolled metal. It can be a channel or an I-beam. For the manufacture of the frame, a metal corner with a long shelf of 45-50 mm is best suited. Sheathe gates can be corrugated or wooden, edged planed board. We will also need self-tapping screws, awnings (for attaching the gates to the racks) and latches.
Instruments
To make the gate, we will need to purchase or borrow:
-
welding machine and electrodes (3-4mm thick)
-
grinder under a circle of 180 or 250mm
-
drill
-
hacksaw (for making wooden gates)
How to make gates from corrugated board
First of all, it is necessary to make and install racks for attaching the gate. To do this, take a channel with a size of 120 mm (length between the shelves), cut off the necessary length with a grinder, immediately take into account that the channel will be concreted by 400-500 mm into the ground, weld the heel to the channel base (this is a 200 by 200 mm sheet of metal, 5 mm thick) so that the rack reliably stood in concrete. Then we concreted the manufactured racks (in the number of two copies) to a depth of 400-500 mm, strictly vertically, and also at the same height on the horizontal plane.
Then we proceed to the manufacture of gate leaves. As we decided, the sashes will be made from a corner of 50 mm, by welding using a welding machine using 3-4 mm diameter electrodes. The length and width of the frame is selected depending on what kind of transport will pass through this gate. I would like to immediately note that the slag on the welds must be cleaned with a grinder.
We fix the profiled sheet using self-tapping screws or welding.
Then we weld canopies pre-ordered or made to the racks and hang the gate leaves on them. It remains to weld the valves, install the lock and paint the gate with paint.
How to make a sliding gate
One of the main advantages of sliding gates is that they save enough free space, and this is an important factor for a small summer cottage or country house.
Sashes and goalposts are manufactured as described above. And we also need two U-shaped profiles that will carry out the bearing function when opening and closing the gate, the only requirement is that the supporting beams must support the weight of the gate. Eight bearings will also be needed, the sizes of which we choose at random and we attach them to the gate leaves, 4 for each (2 on the top and two on the bottom).
Next, we concrete the racks, between them we weld a U-shaped profile from below, install the gate leaves and cook the second supporting profile from above, thereby fixing the gate leaves.
Then we install the castle and paint the gate.
How to make a wooden gate
First you need to decide what material to make the racks and the door frame. If it is a tree, then racks will be needed from solid wood, such as oak. When installing, it is best to concrete the racks at 60-80cm and so that the bases of the racks do not rot, the part that will be concreted must be treated with resin or tar.
The frame of the wooden gate is made of a 50 x 25 mm rail, the frame elements are connected using bolts or screws. Then the frame is sewn up with a planed edged board. We take the width of the board from 150 to 250mm, the thickness can be 25mm. We fasten the board to the door frame with nails, bolts or self-tapping screws.
Using canopies, we fasten the gate leaves to the racks, we process all the wooden parts with anti-bark beetles (can be found in any hardware store) and paint twice with oil.
You can make a wooden gate in a slightly different way. To do this, we make racks from a channel, a pipe or an I-beam, weld a heel to the base and concrete to a depth of 60-80 centimeters, weld awnings to the racks.
Then we proceed to the manufacture of the gate leaf frame. We make it from a metal corner with a shelf size of 45-50 mm, welding it together. Do not forget to remove the slag at the welds with a grinder in order to avoid premature corrosion.
Well, the frame is ready and now we sew it with a rounded, edged board. We take the width of the board from 100 to 250 millimeters, a thickness of 25 mm will be enough. We fix the wooden planks to the frame using bolts. Do not forget to treat the wooden parts with the anti-bark beetle product and paint it twice with oil paint.
The second version of wooden doors in my opinion looks more attractive from the point of view of design and is not inferior in durability to its metal counterpart.
