Shingles - what it is, how to choose the right, useful tips
Flexible tiles are quite widespread in modern construction. This material is called differently: soft or flexible shingles, roofing tiles - based on the technical characteristics of the material, or shingle - given the shape of the sheets and the laying method. The flexibility and flexibility of the material allows you to successfully perform roofing on the roofs of the most complex shapes.

What is a flexible bituminous tile
The bituminous tile has the form of a rectangular sheet with standard dimensions of 100 x 33 cm. At one end of the sheet there are curly cuts that make installation easy and ensure tightness of the assembly. Depending on the manufacturer, the material may have a slightly different shape in geometry, and the use of decorative dusting gives it an original attractive appearance and a wide variety of shades.
Since the quality of the roof plays a direct role in the future comfortable living in the house, initially you should carefully study the market of modern roofing materials and determine an acceptable option for yourself - first of all, by quality, then - by price parameters.
A tile made on the basis of fiberglass with a bitumen coating is one of the best options for a roofing material that allows for a reasonable amount to build a fairly high-quality roof. In addition to fiberglass, organic cellulose can be used as the basis of the material, it serves as a reinforcing layer connecting the layers of oxidized bitumen, the presence of polymers in its composition gives the material plasticity, strength, and high resistance to deformation.
The outer layer of flexible bituminous tiles is covered with basalt granulate, mineral chips or slate, they increase decorative qualities and prevent the possibility of the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation and weather factors.
The reverse side of the tile sheets is protected by a polyethylene film, its surface is an adhesive layer, in which case the tile is used as a self-adhesive material. The second, traditional type of material, has the reverse side sprinkled with silicon sand - it simplifies the transportation and storage of material, because protects sheets from gluing among themselves.
Where is shingles used
Installation of a roof from a bituminous tile - often seems as the most optimal option for the construction of public buildings, the construction of private cottages, and the construction of industrial facilities.
The flexibility and plasticity of the material allows it to be used for roofs of complex configuration.
A serious obstacle to this choice can only be the roof slope - it should not exceed 90 degrees, and not be less than 12 degrees.
Material Features
Among the main advantages of shingles should be noted:
- the use in the production of exclusively the highest quality materials that do not create any third-party odors,
- high heat resistance of the material allows to avoid its spreading even in operating conditions in the southern regions,
- the large thickness of the sheets allows the material to have high tensile strength at longitudinal and transverse loads,
- the use of dedusted shale sprinkles avoids their losses during transportation and laying of the material,
- aesthetic appearance and a wide range of shades, allowing you to embody the original ideas of designers,
- the ability to maintain the original color over a long period of operation, which is about 40-50 years,
- during installation, a small amount of waste is obtained, even if the roof has a complex shape,
- complete roofing material with cornice, ridge and valley stripes.
Bituminous tile - the price of material and components
Before purchasing the material, you should correctly calculate the costs. They will include the cost of: tiles, lining carpet, additional elements, i.e. To perform such a calculation, it will not be enough to know only the area of \u200b\u200bthe roof. When calculating, you can also take into account the fact that there is practically no waste when laying this material. To perform the calculation, it is easiest to use a house drawing, on which all its dimensions are affixed.
What to look for when buying bituminous tiles
As the building materials market today is saturated with the products of numerous manufacturers, it can be difficult for the consumer to sort out the products presented and determine which kind of tile material to choose. If you listen to the recommendations of specialists, then for a proper assessment of the quality of the material as a whole, each layer should be considered.
Since the protective layer of the front side is a layer of basalt or mineral granulate, we take into account that the shape of the fragments should be rounded - round granules adhere more tightly than scaly granules and can provide more reliable protection of bitumen from weather factors. Attention should be paid to the resistance of the protective layer to ultraviolet - the life of the material will directly depend on this.
Next, we begin to consider the bitumen layer. In the manufacture of roofing materials, two types of bitumen are used - oxidized and modified. The first is the result of a traditionally used process. A modified version of bitumen is obtained as a result of the use of modifiers, unfortunately not all of them are of sufficient quality and their use in the manufacturing process of roofing material cannot be called rational.
As a result of the test of time, two types of modifiers proved to be quite good: SBS - styrene-butadiene-styrene and APP - atactic-polypropylene. In climatic conditions of the middle strip, materials made using the SBS modifier proved to be better - the resulting bitumen layer has better elasticity. But in the pursuit of cost reduction, some manufacturers consider it possible to reduce the requirements for the quality of bitumen and the thickness of its layer, ultimately this translates into a decrease in reliability and a decrease in service life.
Regarding the quality of the reinforcing layer, it can be noted that the shape stability of tile tiles depends on the tensile coefficient of the reinforcing materials, which are used as felt or fiberglass. The higher the density of the reinforcing layer, the better the roofing material.
As we already mentioned, the lower layer of the material either has self-adhesive strips or is generally self-adhesive. Installation of bitumen tiles will be very difficult if the base of the lower layer is contaminated with sand - this will significantly reduce adhesion and degrade the quality of waterproofing.
Major material suppliers
Today, the segment of roofing tiles in the Russian market of building materials is filled mainly with three major manufacturers: the Finnish factory Katepal, the Belgian-Canadian factory IKO and the Spanish-Russian company atepal, the shinglas bitumen has proved to be quite good.
Each manufacturer offers a fairly wide range of products, with roughly the same price level, from about 9 to 14 euros per square meter. The price depends on the quality characteristics and the shade of the material.
Useful Tips
To make the installation of bituminous tiles with your own hands done with ease, and the roof has served for a long time, some recommendations from experts should be noted.
- Walking on the roof of shingles should only be in case of emergency, performing installation work it is better to wear shoes with soft soles.
- In winter, snow and ice will need to be removed from the tiled roof. Snow is removed when its amount exceeds the norms permissible for this type of roof. Snow should not be completely removed - the upper part of the snowdrift is removed in layers, leaving a protective 10-centimeter layer. When using plastic shovels or scrapers, metal tools are not allowed to be used. It is not recommended to dump the shot snow on the platforms located below, it is also impossible to rake it towards the wall.
- To extend the service life and avoid damage to the material, it is recommended to carefully remove heavy objects that have fallen on the roof, branches, in fact, branches on trees growing next to the house, should be trimmed in a timely manner.
Twice a year, a routine inspection of the joint surface and the integrity of the joints, the condition of the base of the cornices and metal elements on the roof will be required. The best time to visit is after the snow melts in spring and late autumn, before the start of snowfalls.
Roof repair
If during the inspection minor damaged areas are noticed, then the defects can be eliminated on their own. For example, broken seams can be treated with hot bitumen, you can fix the fastening of tin elements on your own. Replacing a damaged sheet, due to the special structure of the material, is also quite simple. If the work turns out to be more complex and time-consuming, then the right decision would be to contact a company specializing in the laying and repair of soft tile roofs.
