What is OSB plywood (osb)
Plywood, translated from German - sheet wood material, consisting of three or more, perpendicular to the fibers arranged to each other, glued together layers of solid wood. Plywood is a high-strength material that is easy to process, has a fairly stable shape.
OSB plywood (oriented particle briquette replaced in Russian with the word slab) is an improved version of plywood. OSB plywood consists of several layers of flat wood chips located, as in ordinary plywood, perpendicular to the fibers to each other, and glued with special resins under the influence of pressure and temperature.
Thanks to the production technology, OSB plywood becomes stronger, more elastic (because it does not have knots or spontaneous changes in the direction of wood fibers) and has higher moisture resistance due to the processing of chips with a special water-repellent emulsion.
OSB plywood specifications
OSB plywood has the following specifications:
- it is simply and quickly processed and mounted (for greater simplicity and speed of installation, there are even OSB boards with ready-made joints in the groove).
- the plywood constructions obtained using OSB have a sufficiently high strength and relatively low weight, although OSB plywood has impressive dimensions: a standard maximum of 2.5x1.25 m and up to 2.5 cm in thickness, while the requirements for dimensions, their standardity and minimum errors between OSB plates of the same parameters, the leading manufacturers are minimal.
- OSB plate is quite environmentally friendly material, because binders, harmful resins, in it from 2 to 5% (after all, the main method of its manufacture is pressing under the influence of temperature).
- like any other pressed material, OSB plate is difficult to ignite, which speaks in favor of its fire resistance and safety.
OSB plywood comes in several classes, offered to us by European standards. Each class has not only its price category, but also a specific area of \u200b\u200bapplication. So, the lowest class of OSB board is OSB 1, the best OSB 4, but the most popular and optimal in terms of price and quality is OSB 3.
Let's consider each class in more detail:
OSB 1 OSB general purpose plywood, can be used for the manufacture of some furniture elements, as an inner lining of premises, packaging of goods, but not as a structural material because of its high fragility for plywood. Its operation is limited to dry rooms, as this class of OSB plywood is not moisture resistant
OSB 2 OSB plywood used as a structural material (partitions, interior wall cladding, furniture elements) indoors, and only in a dry environment.
OSB 3 OSB plywood, which is used as structures both inside (walls and partitions, as interior, as in bathrooms, kitchens, attics, and floors in all these rooms), and outside buildings and structures (exterior cladding of walls and roofs of a building) in any, including in a humid environment, i.e. This is moisture resistant OSB plywood. It does not crumble in cuts, is not susceptible to decay and damage by pests.
OSB 4 this is reinforced osb plywood for the construction of load-bearing structures characterized by increased resistance to physical and mechanical stresses and increased resistance to prolonged exposure to moisture, without additional processing. The scope is similar to OSB 3, but with great guarantees and at a great price (OSB 4 costs about 2 times more than OSB 3).
OSB or plywood board: pros and cons
Which is better, plywood or osb board? It all depends on what you want to get as a result.
- Plywood is more expensive than plywood osb price for which is significantly, sometimes, at times, lower.
- Plywood is less moisture resistant than OSB board (OSB 3 and OSB 4).
- Plywood is more harmful than OSB board, it contains 10 times more harmful adhesive resins.
- And plywood and OSB boards have approximately the same sound and heat insulating properties. But, the heat resistance of OSB plywood is greater than that of ordinary.
- Most often, they do not use osb boards, unlike plywood, in the finish of walls and floors. Although, demand and fashion are changing this trend.
Application in the construction of OSB plywood
Here are just some examples of the use of OSB plywood (mainly OSB3 plywood) in the construction and decoration of premises:
- for floors, ceilings and walls in order to level, followed by finishing with wallpaper, almost any floor covering (including ceramic tiles and tarquette non-water based glue)
- roofs under a flexible tile
- wall cladding
- making furniture
