A visit to Turkey must necessarily include the reception of traditional bathing procedures in the hammam, which is one of the important areas of culture that helps to fully understand the philosophical worldview of the inhabitants of this eastern country.

Turkish bath hamam - what is it
The Turkish hammam is far from a bath complex, limited to a pool and steam room, it is an original method of relaxing the body and soul, in order to completely cleanse their body, people spend several hours in a row in the hammam, are engaged in drinking herbal infusions and teas and intimate conversations.
If we talk about the traditional premises of the hammam, it should be noted that it accommodates several rooms:
- the locker room, where all things, shoes and clothes should be left, it is recommended to follow further only in a loincloth from a towel,
- the next bathing room will be the ablution room, they are carried out using water pouring from a copper basin and olive soap, the procedure serves to remove dust and dirt accumulated on the surface of the skin,
- only then does a person fall into a steam room, however, the conditions in it bear little resemblance to a traditional steam room used by the northern peoples - the maximum temperature in a Turkish bath is from +40 to +60 C, at 100% humidity.
The steam room is equipped with special sunbeds, but serves as the material for their manufacture.
not wood, but marble. You can lie on such a heated stone lounger at a very comfortable temperature for a long time. On the same sunbeds, master bathhouse attendants spend oil and foam massages and peels on vacationers.
Even after such a cool steam room, the body temperature should be lowered slowly, first diving simply in cool, then in icy water.
How does hammam affect the body
The most important task of a hammam is to give a person the opportunity to relax and fully relax, to calm his nervous system. In fact, after visiting the Turkish bath, the mood becomes better, the person becomes calmer, migraine and insomnia cease to bother him. Experts say that a systematic visit to the hammam helps:
- rejuvenation of the whole body,
- skin condition improvement
- slowing down the aging process
- accelerate metabolism, i.e. in the long run - weight loss.
The ability of a Turkish bath to provide deep and gentle warming of muscles and joints allows recommending its visit to people:
- with inflammatory joint diseases,
- radiculitis
- spinal diseases
- arthritis
- osteoporosis
- those who require active recovery after serious physical exertion,
- those who suffer from insomnia.
But even the gentle heat of a Turkish bath is contraindicated:
- cancer patients
- suffering from acute inflammatory processes of internal organs,
- people with cardiovascular disease.
It can be noted that due to its extremely mild effect on the body, the hammam has much less contraindications than other types of baths. However, people who know that they have health problems should definitely consult a doctor.
How is the hammam
Since this place is intended for relaxation, its interior is usually very beautifully arranged, benches and floors are made of marble, walls are decorated with mosaic panels. In a Turkish bath, all visitors take a steam bath in a spacious hall with comfortable sunbeds; a flat stone is placed in the center of the hall. Also close to the center is the pool, but it is not intended for swimming, but in order to maintain the required level of steam in the room with its fumes.
By design, the Turkish bath is a domed structure. The dome ceiling is not at all a fad, it is built solely for practical reasons: the condensate deposited on its surface does not drip down, soars onto the heads, but slowly flows down the walls. A feature of Turkish baths are heated floors and sunbeds.
Is it possible to build a hamam on a suburban area
The Turkish bath has recently gained more and more popularity, especially among those people who, for health reasons, cannot afford to visit a Russian bath or a Finnish dry sauna. Of course, to equip a bathhouse according to all the rules of a hamam on a suburban area, and even more so in a city apartment, is not possible, but thanks to the use of modern equipment and a steam generator, it is possible to obtain the necessary humidity and temperature parameters in a single small room within a cottage or a separate building bath house - quite real.
The device of a modern home hammam consists in arranging two sealed rooms: a steam room and a technical room. The main requirements for such rooms will be the availability of communications, such as:
- sewerage
- water supply,
- power supply
- ventilation.
It should be noted that the Turkish bath equipment will require quite energy-intensive. You will also need space for taking water treatments and massages. A prerequisite will also be the presence of a shower or a container of water, spacious enough for bathing.
As for the technical room, the following devices should be placed in it:
- heating system
- steam generating unit
- electrical panel
- device for aromatization of air,
- if backlighting is planned, then a light projector.
walls
When arranging a steam room, it is recommended to observe some architectural features, in particular - it is advisable to give the ceiling a dome-shaped shape, like in a real hammam, otherwise drops of condensation will drain onto people resting. In order to save, you can build an arch shaped ceiling. In any case, the ceiling height should be at least 2.6 m.
A feature of the interior of the hamam is the complete absence of wood inside - sunbeds, benches, other furnishings are made of stone, more often marble, but other stones can also be used, for example smalt. As a finishing material for the walls can be used ceramic tiles or mosaics.
An important point - the walls of the hamam should be multi-layered, consist of layers of insulation material, steam and waterproofing, decoration. Also inside them are elements of a heating system.
the door
To maintain a stable temperature, the doors for the Turkish bath also use special ones - tightly closed, characterized by high thermal insulation characteristics. A door made of wood, even hardwood, if used in conditions of 100% humidity and frequent temperature changes will not last long.
A more rational option would be to purchase special impact-resistant glass doors, the glass for the manufacture of which also has heat-resistant qualities. The door frame for bath doors is usually made of anodized aluminum, which is characterized by excellent corrosion resistance. Accessories for such doors use chrome.
In appearance, the doors should correspond to the exquisite exterior decoration of the room, golden, bronze or silver shades of the door will well emphasize the beauty of natural stone or ceramic tiles.
heating features
When arranging a hammam, it will be necessary to pay special attention to the systems of floor heating, benches, walls. In this case, water or electric heaters can be used. Each of the heating systems should be an independent circuit, allowing to heat a certain element if necessary. To avoid problems with overheating of surfaces intended for lying, modern models of temperature regulators are used. In this case, the correct calculation of the power of the heating circuits is important.
lighting
The lighting of the bath room should be heat-resistant and sufficiently adapted for operation in high humidity conditions. Lamps can be used wall or ceiling. In order to emphasize the unique Turkish flavor, they often resort to installing special flavors, and use the starry sky option as a backlight.
Steam generator for Turkish bath
If a Turkish bath is organized in a country house or apartment, you will definitely need to install a steam generator with which you can quickly get the right quality steam. You can install the steam unit in the room adjacent to the steam room, if the space is extremely limited, you can purchase a fairly compact wall model.
Modern steam generators are equipped with remote control units, they can be controlled from a distance. The installed steam generator is connected to an electric current source and a water supply system. The power of the device for generating steam is calculated depending on the size of the hamam.
In order to completely secure the process of staying in the steam room, one should purchase modern models of steam generators equipped with an overheat protection system that allows you to quickly change the intensity of steam generation.
It will not be superfluous to take care of installing a water filter - this will extend the life of the steam generating device.
When arranging a hamam in a private house with autonomous heating, a separate circuit should be provided for heating the bath, this will allow heating only the bath, and not the whole house, which is very important in the summer.
Hamam in a modern way
An alternative to a traditional hammam can be a special steam cabin, it is quite compact and can be installed in an ordinary apartment, where the space is quite limited. The cabin is thoroughly equipped - in addition to the steam generator, it has:
- phyto essence atomizer,
- shower,
- hydromassage,
- lighting that creates more aesthetic conditions for relaxation and recreation.
The material for the manufacture of steam cabins are:
- acrylic,
- a natural stone,
- ceramic materials.
As the walls, you can also use sections of thick-walled glass, this option will achieve a visual expansion of the space. Glass walls do not need to be decorated.
