Thermal insulation of the floor on the balcony. Insulation of the floor on the balcony is necessary if it is planned to use it as an additional room.
Are the apartment areas not enough? Do you need new premises for storage or organization of an additional living room? Then it's time to insulate your balcony or loggia and use them to all possible 100%! And in our article we will talk about how to start warming a balcony or a loggia: how to properly, quickly, affordablely and functionally heat a floor!

Loggia or balcony: what you need to know about floor insulation
Before you begin any construction and installation work to expand your living space with a balcony or loggia, you need to clearly know what you have, in the end, a balcony or a loggia? You need to know this, it’s necessary, but all in order in order to choose the right type and method of insulation,
- based on the type and layer of insulation: the balcony adjoins only one wall of the house, and therefore, it is a colder room that requires more insulation, in contrast to the loggia, in which at least 2 walls border the apartment. That is, they require less insulation, a smaller layer of insulation, in comparison with the balcony, both the floor and the walls with the ceiling.
- based on the weight of the materials used, both the screed and insulation, and the finish of the floor: the balcony, as already mentioned, is less fixed in comparison with the loggia (in terms of the number of walls adjacent to them), which means it is especially not advisable to load it.
All this must be taken into account during the subsequent warming of the floor on the balcony or loggia.
In the meantime, we will determine how the floor is usually insulated in these rooms.
Warming and leveling the floor on the balcony and loggia: algorithm of actions
Usually, insulation of the floor on the balcony and whether the loggia is accompanied by its parallel alignment.
And, in general, is as follows:
-When using any of the selected types of insulation, floor waterproofing is very desirable:plastic wrap or special steam, heat and water insulators that reflect heat back into the room. The waterproofing of the floor is especially important in case of balcony insulation. It will also serve as additional sound insulation.
- in the correct choice of insulation material: the thickness of the floor insulation, depending on the chosen material, will be from 3 to 20 cm, and therefore the height of the resulting room will be much less, especially when you consider that the ceiling also needs to be insulated. That is, if you need a thinner insulation layer, without sacrificing thermal insulation properties, we take polystyrene foam, the height of the balcony or loggia allows you to steal valuable centimeters, take more affordable mineral wool and lay it in a layer of 15-20cm ..
-and leveling the floor on the balcony or loggia, and its insulation, regardless of the selected materials, produced by beacons / floor battens, set by level.
-a draft floor is required, regardless of whether you are making a dry screed or laying a layer of mineral wool, i.e. insulate the floor with plywood or chipboard. All so that dust particles from the insulation (expanded clay, mineral wool) during further operation of the insulated room, floor, do not get into our lungs and skin.
These are general rules and an algorithm for the progress of warming-leveling the floor on a balcony or loggia.
Now, we will consider each version of the insulation-leveling device, in detail.
Floor insulation on the balcony and loggia: types and materials
You can insulate and level the floor on the balcony and loggia with the following materials:
Floor screed: performed, this type of screed, as in any other room, using ready-made mixtures or self-prepared cement-sand mortar, through beacons. But, the nuances of arranging the floor screed on the balcony or loggia are as follows: so that the cement-sand screed is also a heater (we all know that warm walls are thick), its layer should be very impressive, about 15 cm: and this, moreover, which is costly, time-consuming and quite long (the screed reaches 28 days until fully ready), but it is also unacceptably heavy, by weight, for balconies and very undesirable for loggias.
- A floor coupler on a heater or a semi-dry coupler (the solution contains water, but in such quantities that, when drying quickly, the screed does not deform and does not crack): additional thermal insulation of the screed is carried out. Screed, with this type of floor insulation should not be less than 4 cm with a reinforcing layer-metal mesh, in the center of the screed: i.e. insulation, screed, reinforcing layer, screed. Insulation, in this case, use extruded polystyrene foam or polystyrene, for greater reliability, glued to the floor surface of the loggia or balcony, between the beacons. This screed is warm, durable and lighter than ordinary sand-cement, which is important in case of insulation of the balcony and loggia. The advantage of this screed is that it is waterproof in all respects and it can be easily laid on it with ceramic tiles, on tile adhesive and the installation of warm floors, also under the tile, this is additional heating and comfort, especially if you use the resulting space like a living room or study.
-Dry floor screed: from the name itself it is clear that screed will be made on beacons, but expanded clay or expanded polystyrene in granules acts as a leveling and at the same time insulating substance.
Such thermal insulation for the floor on the balcony and loggia is also very fast, affordable, both for self-installation and for financial costs.
- Thermal insulation of the floor on the balcony with plywood: in fact, a plywood or chipboard layer is a draft layer on top of the insulation. But, in any case, insulation with plywood is a quick and affordable way to insulate, level the floor and not make it heavier.
Do-it-yourself insulation of the balcony floor
In order to finally level and insulate the floor on your balcony or loggia, you need not only to watch this video,
but also critical of what he saw, applying the knowledge already obtained in our article.
And then your floors on the balcony will be warm, the design of the balcony is solid and safe, and the operation of the balcony or loggia is comfortable and pleasant.
