Fire safety in the garden
Statistics show that the threat of fire hazard situations in suburban areas increases with the onset of summer heat, a certain tendency to their increase is noted with the onset of the winter heating season. This is due to the fact that for the construction of country houses, wood or other materials that are prone to light fires are often used, in addition, dry uncleaned grass, carelessly thrown cigarette butts or a fault in the wiring in the house can pose a fire hazard. Since there are many causes of fire, the issue of fire safety in the garden area should be carefully and seriously considered, because a fire can cause serious damage to the property or even the health of the owners of a suburban area.

Fire safety in the country - the location of buildings and the processing of combustible building materials with flame retardants
The correct location of buildings on the garden plot will help reduce the risk of a serious fire - the distance between them should be more than 6 m for stone structures, for wood - from 8 m, if even a fire occurs, then the fire cannot spread to nearby structures. In country houses, if they are heated by a stove or fireplace, it is imperative to provide for the presence of a non-combustible coating at the base (sheet of metal or ceramic tile), because a spark or a coal that has fallen out of the stove can also cause a fire.
The location of the plot relative to the forest is also important - if the forest is close, it is advisable to protect the plot, which is plowed and clean of weeds or debris, from a strip of 6 m wide, which would separate the garden plot from the forest. The optimal and approved by the fire safety regulations distance from the forest is not less than 15 m.
Especially dangerous areas are areas located close to or directly on drained bogs or peat bogs. It is not difficult to determine peaty soil - if you dig it, then the overturned soil will be brown in color, crumbly and unnaturally light. If the site borders on a peat bog, then experts recommend adding to other safety measures the processing of the border strip with a special foaming solution. It can be purchased at the distribution network.
Fields with dry grasses and weeds located next to the garden plot are also dangerous.
If wood was used in the construction of the house, then it must be treated with flame retardants - this will reduce the very risk of fire, and if it does, the owners will have more time to extinguish the fire on their own and wait for help from the fire department.
When repairing a house or building it, it is advisable to use fire-resistant materials, fire-retardant paints for structures made of wood and metal, fire doors with a self-closing mechanism that can prevent the spread of fire for some time. Garage doors and utility room doors should be installed with a high degree of fire resistance.
Be careful with cigarette butts and household gas.
It is not difficult to prevent the possibility of fire at the summer cottage - this will require strict implementation of very simple fire safety measures. They suggest:
- careful handling of fire, in particular - during the summer drought it is recommended to smoke only in places suitable for this,
- throw cigarette butts only extinguished into ashtrays, urns or metal containers (according to fire reports, a significant percentage of fires occur due to the fault of smokers).
No less dangerous in the opinion of firefighters is the misuse of household gas appliances that are used in summer cottages. It is not recommended to leave the included gas stoves unattended and dry the laundry above them. The use of gas in cylinders should only be carried out if officially registered and certified enterprises are engaged in their refueling. Gas cylinders, containers with flammable liquids and substances should not be placed near buildings in open areas or between buildings themselves.
Dry grass and uncleaned debris can cause a fire
Fire safety rules at the cottage recommend thorough cleaning of dry grass and garbage in the area - the grass between the summer cottages and trees in the garden should be cleaned as it dries. Dispose of collected garbage, dry leaves, pine needles and grass carefully, on a metal sheet or in a metal barrel. The charred residues after burning should be well poured with water - sometimes the seemingly extinguished coals can have a temperature sufficient to ignite. The same can be said of ash removed from a fireplace or stove.
It should be remembered that a ground fire, in which shrubs burn and the grass is very dangerous! If there are dead wood areas near the dacha village, then the owners of the plots should be organized and dry grass should be harvested together.
Compliance with fire safety when using electrical appliances
Since most suburban areas are electrified, it makes sense to talk about measures to prevent fire from improper operation of electrical equipment. Everyone knows that it is impossible to use faulty electrical appliances, broken sockets. Monitor the health of the network, identify malfunctions and repair the wiring elements should be timely.
To protect light bulbs and fixtures
- do not use paper lampshades, fabric,
- it is not recommended to use heating devices that are not equipped with thermal protection,
- you should abandon the use of home-made heating appliances.
Close to buildings, gas or electric welding machines should be used with special care, and only if the wooden elements of their structure are treated with fire-retardant treatment.
Remember - you can extinguish flammable electrical wiring and appliances only with a carbon dioxide or powder fire extinguisher.
Collective security
Collective security, which assumes a responsible attitude to fire safety by all neighbors in the site, is important for each owner of the cottage. Together with them, one should consider the possibility of convenient passage of fire equipment, if necessary, both to the sections themselves and to the water sources located near them - a pond or stream. If there are no natural reservoirs near the summer cottage, then in accordance with the fire safety requirements and construction standards, it should be possible to construct a fire pond and fill it with water. On their own, land owners can expand the road leading to water sources.
It should also hang in the cottage village market - it will help to quickly notify all owners of the danger.
Experts consider the fire alarm system equipment to be the best, but not the cheapest option. You should also purchase fire extinguishers, at least a couple of pieces for each built-up garden plot, and fire hoses. Before the summer heat, it is advisable to contact the appropriate construction companies about the impregnation of wooden buildings with fire-fighting means - it is possible with a collective order it will be possible to get a discount on this service.
The list of requirements for summer cottages indicates that if the garden village is located at a distance greater than 200 m from the reservoir, fire pond equipment with a capacity of at least 25 cubic meters with good access roads to it will be required. Cottage communities with up to 300 garden plots should have a portable fire-fighting pump (SNiP 30-02-97), with a larger number of participants it is recommended to purchase a trailed motor pump.
What fire fighting equipment should be available in every garden
Fire safety also implies the presence in each garden economy of such simple but necessary fire extinguishing means:
- a large barrel filled with water, at least 200 liters,
- a few shovels
- sand box,
- bagra
- buckets
- stairs, with which you can reach the roof, on the roof itself - stairs that allow you to climb to the roof ridge,
- a mobile phone with which you can report the fire to the appropriate services,
- powder extinguisher in good condition.
In addition to a barrel of water, it’s nice to equip at least a small pond or pool, the amount of water in which would be enough to extinguish a fire.
Some helpful suggestions that non-compliance often cause a fire
Simple, elementary rules of behavior in everyday life will help to prevent a fire:
- bonfires cannot be made near buildings, you can only leave the bonfire by filling it with water and making sure that it is completely extinguished,
- when carrying out construction work, such as welding, the use of a chainsaw, fire safety measures should be strictly observed,
- special attention should be paid to the operation of the sauna stove,
- the condition of fire retardant impregnation of wooden structures of buildings should be checked twice a year,
- the operation of kerosene appliances, lamps or lanterns can be carried out in the presence of safety metal caps, such devices can be placed at least 0.2 m from the wall, fastening to the walls must be reliable, and the lamps themselves must be equipped with reflectors,
- when using kerogases and kerosene, refueling with flammable liquids, for example, alcohol, gasoline, solvents, is not allowed,
- every year in the summer, the serviceability of furnaces and chimneys should be checked, soot should be cleaned,
- the metal sheet covering the surface of the wooden floor in front of the stove should have dimensions not less than 50x50 cm, it should not be damaged.
Remember, simple precautions are quite capable of preventing a fire!
