What types of fabric are used as finishing materials for walls
Since almost every fashionable novelty in design represents a slightly modernized old version of the finish, it is not necessary to say that soft wall panels are something ultra-modern. A couple of centuries ago, wall upholstery was used quite widely, they were used, of course, in rich houses and palaces. A new wave of interest has significantly expanded the list of materials that began to be used as decoration. Designers argue that soft panels for walls are one of the most interesting and at the same time simple solutions.
The main goal pursued when using fabrics as wall decoration is to create an amazing effect, an atmosphere of special luxury and comfort. Of course, fabrics for this have to be carefully selected, paying attention to their texture, shades, density, they can be artificial and natural:
- jute
- cotton
- linen
- silk
- viscose
- suede
- velor.
Looks attractive with materials with embroidery elements, with interwoven shiny threads that shimmer when light hits them.
All soft panels can be divided into types:
- According to the material of manufacture. The cheapest, fabric ones, they do not sag or stretch, the available cleaning options during operation are some inconvenience. Made of leatherette or faux suede, the cost is higher, but differ in presentable appearance, ease of cleaning and the ability to obtain special design effects.
- By the size of the panels, they can be small (0.4x0.4 m), or larger (the area of each tile can be up to 1 square meter), or those that will cover the entire surface of the wall. In the case of using small panels, the installation consists in attaching to the wall surface and sealing joints at the joints with decorative overlays.
According to the drawing, and it can be the most diverse, geometric, floral, etc., the use of the print is limited only by the imagination of the artist who creates it.

Soft wall panels - advantages and disadvantages
Since repairs are done every few years, wall coverings should not only differ in particular beauty, but also be practical. If we consider soft wall panels, then we can note:
- air and moisture permeability, allowing to maintain the optimal climate for the person in the room,
- the ability to clean and wash the fabric directly on the site, it is impossible to do such operations with other materials, for example, wallpaper,
- high resistance to various kinds of mechanical loads,
- environmental friendliness
- durability and wear resistance, service life can reach 25 years,
- heat and noise insulation characteristics,
- a tendency to ignite and the inability to release toxic substances when heated,
- a wide selection in terms of texture and colors,
- the ability to organically fit into the interior,
- simplicity and high speed of installation, the ability to easily hide all defects present on the surface of the walls,
- dismantled panels, provided they retain their decorative appearance, can be reused.
Of the significant disadvantages of soft panels, their rather high cost should be noted. Limit the use of fabric materials should be if in the house one of the family members suffers from allergies - the texture of the fabric in any case contributes to some accumulation of surface dust. Naturally, frequent and thorough cleaning, including cleaning the walls, will be required. A panel with a damaged surface will have to be completely replaced.
Soft Panel Design
The design of soft wall panels is multilayer:
- the top layer, fabric or leather, is durable, fire resistant and decorative,
- medium - serves to retain sound and heat, can be foam rubber, synthetic winterizer, mineral wool,
- the lower, imparting strength and holding shape is made of PVC plates.
Usually, permanent magnets are built into the panels; they have no effect on the operation of electronic and electrical equipment. They are designed to hold parts weighing about 2 kg. If the size of the product is large and the weight is more solid, then several pieces of magnets are installed, each panel is held by at least 4 magnetic systems.
For the installation of some types of panels using glue or screws.
DIY soft wall panels
capitone
You can make soft wall panels with your own hands in two ways, the first of them, the most common - capiton, or carriage screed. As a basis, sheets of chipboard or plywood are used. At the preparation stage, the location of the pressure buttons is marked on the sheets, then holes of appropriate sizes are made.
Traditionally used is the placement of holes in a checkerboard pattern, but if desired, another option can be chosen. According to the dimensions of the base, the substrate and the filler are cut. The decorative quality of the panels will largely depend on the quality of the filler.
Experts recommend taking into account that:
- using foam, you can create thicker panels, i.e. the walls will be soft, this option is the perfect solution for decorating a children's room;
- synthetic winterizer allows you to create a flat surface, a small specific weight of synthetic winterizer to eliminate the possibility of sagging and will not contribute to surface deformation.
To fix the substrate layer to the base, glue is used.
When cutting upholstery fabric, it is imperative to leave allowances for the thickness of the substrate, it will also take a few centimeters to bend to the wrong side of the panel. The cut piece of fabric is attached to the wrong side of the panel with a stapler, on each side of the base.
Then set the decorative buttons. For their fastening, it is more rational to use durable nylon threads - they do not stretch, rot or tear, this will significantly extend the life of the panels. First, a piece of thread is attached to the button holder, pulled through a layer of filler and a hole prepared in the base. To fix the thread on the wrong side, use a stapler, several brackets should be installed in different directions - this will provide maximum reliability of fastening.
Special skills or experience in creating and installing soft wall panels will not be required, the main points will be accurate marking and fastening, this will help to avoid distortions in the horizontal and vertical directions.
DIY panels can be fixed to the wall with glue. The complexity of this method is due to the need to create a flat wall surface, i.e. its putty will simplify the process of gluing the primer to the wall surface. To obtain a neat finish on the wall with a pencil, note the location of the panels in advance.
The glue is used ordinary, PVA, it is applied to the wrong side of the panels with a zigzag, then the panel is pressed tightly against the wall. In this case, the installation of panels can be carried out in any direction, which will be the most convenient. But in the event that the panels occupy the entire area of the wall, it is advisable to start mounting from the ceiling and move down.
If you need to reduce the width of the panel, you should detach the finish layer, saw off the excess part of the base, cut off the excess substrate, carefully wrap the coating on the wrong side and fix it with a stapler. Since such panels will look less aesthetically pleasing, it is recommended that you consider an installation option in which the panels do not reach the corner of the room. Naturally, this option requires a symmetrical arrangement of the panels relative to the angle on both sides.
wall mounted frame
First of all, you need to prepare racks of a suitable size and angles as well as self-tapping screws for assembling the frame. Having assembled the frame, it is sewn up with sheets of plywood, a layer of synthetic winterizer is glued to the resulting base. The fabric on the panel is pulled tight, on the wrong side of the frame it is fixed with a stapler. Furniture nails are covered with upholstery material, in order to avoid damage when fastening it before attaching the hammer, a piece of padding polyester, folded in several layers should be placed.
For fastening panels, the thickness of the substrate of which is more than 3 cm, it is recommended to use dowels.
It is recommended to mount the panels end-to-end, this will reduce the possibility of accumulation of dust and dirt between them. The second option for installing tiles is at a considerable distance from each other, about 10-15 cm.
