Moles in the country, how to get rid of moles
Some owners of suburban areas can not avoid not very pleasant acquaintance with pretty cute and generally useful creatures. Perhaps you have already guessed that it will be about moles. Of course, a mole in a garden or in a flower garden is something akin to a natural disaster: new molehills appear on lawns, flowerbeds and beds every day, and funds recommended by garden magazines and neighbors are not always effective enough. Therefore, it will not be amiss to talk about the traditionally used products from moles on the site and discuss technical innovations used to deter small underground pests.

We study the pest dossier
To begin with, you should get to know the creatures that, when they appear on the site, will involuntarily harm their owners:
- as a result of their round-the-clock activity underground, numerous moves will be laid,
- the excellent appetite possessed by moles can cause the active destruction of earthworms,
- as a result of digging moves, soils that are less suitable for growing ornamental plants or vegetables will be brought to the surface.
But besides worms, moles in large quantities eat various insect pests that harm agricultural ones. An ideal habitat for moles - not swampy, but adequately moistened soil - digging is much easier. These animals are most often found in forest and forest-steppe zones.
How to create reliable obstacles that will prevent moles from entering your area
Although the cottage mole can cause constant problems for the owners of the site, one should not strive for its physical destruction, one should try to find a way to scare away these animals or learn how to create obstacles that will reliably protect the site from their penetration - let them live and breed in territories that are not occupied for landing cultivated plants.
Of course, some difficulties may arise due to the fact that the same applied measures in the conditions of a single site may produce the desired results, but will not be effective enough on the other. To determine which of the methods will help in specific conditions can only be experienced. Now let's talk about those factors that can scare off moles.
Are moles afraid of certain smells
There are many supporters of the version that animals will not visit planting sites with a strong unpleasant odor. It is possible that someone on the site this method worked and brought a positive result, but there is reliable knowledge that laying in the molehills with an unpleasant odor, such as tansy grass, elderberry flowers, rags moistened with kerosene or ammonia, did not lead when moles leave, they stop using unpleasant odors, but they dig a few new ones nearby.
Unfortunately, planting around a site of plants whose bulbs have an unpleasant smell or toxicity, for example, daffodils, does not give positive results. It turns out that the imperial hazel grouse or beans are not landing effectively - moles dig moves in the immediate vicinity of the landings. Long-term experience of summer residents shows that using odors to fight moles is not an effective event.
How moles respond to noise and vibration
There is information that you can scare away moles with the help of rumbling cans, in fact, these animals are afraid of excessive noise, but we should also talk about how comfortable the owners of the site will feel, working and relaxing on it - such music of course - It will begin to cause irritation over time.
When figuring out how to get rid of moles with folk remedies, one should recall a quieter and no less effective way - installing weathercocks and turntables. But it does matter:
- scare device design
- installation density on the site - to achieve the desired effect, you will need to install the turntables rather densely.
Making a turntable with your own hands is not at all difficult, this will require:
- deepen a piece of plastic pipe into the ground by 10-15 cm,
- place the support of the vane-pinwheel inside it.
Rotation of the turntable will lead to the appearance of vibration, which will be transmitted to the ground by means of a dug pipe and the support of a weather vane. Despite the small radius of action of such a device, the activity of moles in areas with installed turntables is significantly reduced.
An even greater effect can be obtained when using turntables made of plastic jars mounted on metal pins. The pin is inserted into the ground, and the flask with cut out blades vibrates and makes noise when exposed to wind. The attractiveness of the design is its cheapness and ease of manufacture, as well as efficiency. At least moles will not be digging at a distance of a couple of meters from it.
A significant drawback of plastic vibration and noise generators will be the need for their dense installation - otherwise, moles in the area will not be able to get rid. Vertical structures made of plastic bottles will be more effective, but in any case, it will be necessary to install enough of them at different points in the site.
The reed stems or bottles buried in the ground at a 45-degree angle give a positive result - in windy weather they become a source of noise that repels moles.
Such observations make it possible to conclude that moles are really scared away by vibration and noise. The developers of mole repellers created at industrial enterprises also pushed off this statement. They encourage animals to actively move to a safe distance from the source of sound or vibration, i.e. away from the site.
Proprietary mole repellers can emit ultrasounds that are not audible to the human ear, but well felt by animals, or sounds whose range is accessible to humans. This factor must be taken into account when buying a device - its sounds can annoy the owners to the same extent as creatures that are fought on the site.
Purchased repellers work on solar or conventional batteries. When choosing a device, you should take into account that you can give preference to the first if clear, sunny days prevail in the territory of your residence. In addition, devices running on solar panels produce weaker vibrations with a smaller radius of action. To obtain the result of moles leaving the site, it will take more time. The advantage of such repellers is the absence of the need for replaced batteries.
The most popular of the mole repellent devices are:
- electronic solar-powered device SMR-2003,
- automatically working devices LS-997 M, Grad, Stopkrot, KR-7, Banzai-SY-311 and other analogs.
When choosing a mole repeller, the following factors should be considered:
- soil friability - with more friable signals propagate less actively, therefore it will require the purchase of more devices;
- the radius of the device - it is determined by the power of the device, so the Chiston III anti-crotch has a radius of action of 17 m, the more powerful Tornado OZV.02 - about 25 m;
- the presence of obstacles on the site in the form of wells, foundations or fences dug into the soil, if they are present, then there will be a need to buy more anti-moles - the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe site must be reliably protected.
On the positive side, the installation of an anti-mole will lead to the fact that other not very useful neighbors will leave the site: gophers, bears and other pests of the garden.
Video on the use of such devices can be viewed below:
How to get rid of moles on the site - we use biological weapons
To apply this method you have to get a cat, or two. These cute predators can inflict a significant blow on the digging fraternity and cause it to retreat from the site.
Of course, cats should be chosen that would actively hunt and really become a threat to moles. Sometimes dogs like to hunt with pleasure. Despite some inhumanity of this method, it still does not contradict the laws of nature. Even if some moles become the prey of cats or dogs, the rest will leave their controlled territory, saving their lives and not wanting to put them at risk. It is possible that it will not be possible to achieve a hundred percent result by this method, but positive changes will still be noticeable.
Installation of fencing around the site
Of course, such a measure can be called radical, nevertheless, in the desire to rid themselves of the unpleasant neighborhood, summer residents nevertheless sometimes use it. This method consists in the installation of a fine mesh, the cell of which will protect the fenced area from the penetration of moles, mice or gophers, but will allow free passage of insects and worms. In this case, the mesh should be installed along the entire perimeter of the site, the depth of digging in the mesh should be at least 0.5 m. At the same time, at least 0.15-0.2 m of mesh should remain above the ground surface, which will need to be firmly attached to the fence.
Such a net will prove to be an insurmountable obstacle for moles, at least until it rusts and loses its integrity. The effectiveness of the method remains without a doubt, the question arises only about the cost of such an event and the amount of earthwork that will need to be carried out.
Some more tips to help reduce the severity of the problem:
- do not use fresh manure as fertilizer - its smell is attractive to earthworms, which are a favorite treat for moles,
- planting seedlings should be done in a checkerboard pattern - even if the mole gets into the garden, there will be less damaged plants.
How to protect the lawns
The simplest and most effective method of protecting lawns from moles is laying on the already prepared and sowed soil a fine-mesh plastic mesh Lawn-1. It is an insurmountable barrier for moles to reach the ground surface, as a result of which they completely leave the site.
In addition, the lawn reinforced with such a net has many advantages:
- it can be broken down on slopes with a steepness of up to 30 degrees,
- leaching and weathering of unstressed roots of germinated seeds is significantly reduced, i.e. the grass will be much thicker
- the ground will not sag in case of a weak rolling,
- the soil becomes more resistant to erosion.
What should not be forgotten - we warn our neighbors about the beginning of hostilities against moles
It can be assumed that hasty attempts to expel moles from the site will lead to the fact that earth-moving animals will move to the territory of the neighboring garden. In order to maintain friendly, friendly relations with others, it will not be out of place to warn the neighbors about what measures of struggle you are going to take. And let them decide whether they will combine efforts with you to combat moles.
