How to make a brick BBQ oven in a summer cottage with your own hands
Barbecue fashion came to us from the UK. The idea is really sound. And why not take the stove out of the summer kitchen onto the lawn near the house, while slightly modernizing it? In the open air it is still more pleasant to cook and receive guests. If a similar idea has visited you, then in this case you have three options to solve this problem. Buy a metal mobile barbecue oven, hire builders to equip it, or do the trick yourself. How to proceed is up to you. If the third option is closer to you, and you want to build an oven yourself, then in the article you will find valuable tips on building a brick barbecue.

Choosing a place, type of furnace and materials
So we want to build a barbecue. The first question we must answer is where to place the stove. This is due not only to security, but also to the amount of free space. In addition to the furnace itself (1 2m2), we need a platform near it. At least a meter away from the stove in all directions. Everything will stomp there, from the cook to the children.
After we determine the number of free meters, we can begin to choose a barbecue project. The easiest option, and the smallest one is just the barbecue oven with woodpile. The construction of such a project is not too complicated and not expensive. Even a novice mason is able to master it.
If you have masonry skills, then you can pick up a task and more difficult to build a barbecue with your own hands:
- barbecue oven with sink and countertop;
- barbecue oven with a chimney;
- barbecue oven and kitchen;
- barbecue oven with a canopy and facing with natural stone, etc.
That is, there are a lot of options, and you can always come up with something of your own. If you are going to build a barbecue with your own hands, then choose a project that you can do.
As for the materials for the construction of the furnace, here the choice is a little less. As we already mentioned, we will consider the construction of a brick barbecue. It will serve as the basis. We will need facing and refractory bricks. The amount of brick in pieces will depend on the selected dimensions of the kiln being built.
If we are planning the construction of a simple barbecue, which we will consider below, then we will also have to choose:
- for the construction of the furnace, you can use metal, concrete or refractory bricks (we chose the latter);
- for countertops, artificial stone, wood, ceramics or concrete;
- cladding is not needed if the barbecue is laid out using facing bricks.
- If you use a conventional brick brick, then you should think about the furnish of the furnace (plaster, natural stone, etc.).
Site and foundation preparation
It's time to lay the foundation. It is necessary, the construction, although it does not seem too massive, nevertheless, even in the simplest version it can weigh about a ton.
The foundation can be built in two ways:
- fill in a massive concrete site;
- make a strip foundation according to the plan of the furnace.
Regardless of the option chosen, it all starts with digging trenches. To what depth? It all depends on the depth of freezing of the soil in your area.
In the dug pit, pour crushed stone, tamper. We take the reinforcement and make a reinforcing mesh. For our construction, fittings with a diameter of 6 mm are sufficient. We’re not building a house. We lay to the bottom and make formwork around the perimeter of the foundation.
Now we are preparing concrete. The mixture is prepared in the following proportions: one part of cement accounts for 2 parts of sand, 2 parts of crushed stone and 0.7 parts of water. Fill the formwork, smooth the surface and let it dry for at least three days. Periodically during this period we moisten with water so that the concrete does not crack.
In general, if special additives are not used for accelerated hardening of concrete, then it is recommended that further construction on the established foundation be started no earlier than 28 30 days.
You can lay the foundation of brick. But you must be sure of its quality. For laying the foundation, only a solid red brick of plastic molding is suitable. The advantage of this method is that you do not have to wait a month before the construction of the main part of the barbecue.
Barbecue oven construction: 4 main stages
So, the foundation is ready, you can start architecture. Consider the construction of a simple barbecue for a summer house with an open fryer made of facing bricks. This is a barbecue in the photo below. We divide all the work into eight stages.
Stage 1 - preparatory. Kneading mortar for bricklaying. And here we have two ways:
- or prepare a clay-sandy solution, which is not always possible, since not all clay is applicable for these works;
- either in the cold zone use a normal solution in a ratio of 3 to 1, i.e. for every kilogram of cement there are three kilograms of sand. And in the zone of the furnace, use a special refractory mixture.
Whether or not to waterproof the foundation is up to you. In this building, its absence is not critical.
Stage 2 - build a woodpile. The height of this will depend on your preferences, it is desirable that the roasting pan was at a height of 70 80 cm (considered the most comfortable). Those. approximately 11 rows. We put the rows of supports along the foundation with the usual spoon dressing in two rows with an offset in half a brick. The level is checked horizontally every 2-3 rows of masonry.
Start laying always from the corner. To check the correctness of the angle, you can purchase a special corner level. But since the structure is not high, then most likely your eye will be enough.
Seam thickness 50 mm. To give uniformity to the masonry joints, you can use wooden slats 3 mm thick or a metal square profile of the same size. Reiki is inserted into the masonry between the bricks and put the mortar. When pressing a brick, the solution should not squeeze the rail out of the seam. Thus, uniform seams will be obtained, having an aesthetic appearance that does not require further finishing.
Stage 3 construction of a brazier. We put the 12th row across the previous masonry, this is the protrusion for the fry pan. We wall in equal-angled corners at a distance of 23 cm from each other, i.e. on the length of the refractory brick. We lay the 13th row on each side with a facing brick, and the bottom of the fryer and side are fireproof. Similarly, we put three more rows of bricks and again put the 17th row with a jab, i.e. across the masonry. This ledge for a grid under a barbecue.
Stage 4 completion. Do-it-yourself barbecue ovens will require wind protection. To do this, we lay another 3 - 4 rows of bricks. On the side of the built column, we install a pre-selected countertop and fasten it to the screws, if it is wooden. Let it dry and use it for health.
