Fuchsia care and cultivation, fuchsia in the landscape design of a summer cottage
Undoubtedly, the beautiful fuchsia can be attributed to the number of the most popular flowering plants. Due to the grace of the shape of the flower and the brightness of its color, it is difficult for her to find worthy rivals. A healthy, well-groomed bush during the flowering period throws out a myriad of buds, opening in turn, they maintain the decorative bush for several months in a row.
Depending on the variety, fuchsia can be an ampel plant, strain tree, or shrub. Of course, this allows you to create a wide variety of compositions from flowers grown in pots. In addition, fuchsia is often used to create landscapes of original design.

Fuchsia breeding
To fuchsia to decorate a garden plot or a house adjoining territory, many seedlings will be required, therefore, first of all, it will be necessary to solve the problem of obtaining planting material. For the propagation of fuchsia, several generally accepted methods are used.
seed
Fuchsia is propagated using seeds, mainly only breeders.
Fuchsia grown from seeds, almost never retains the original characteristics of the species. In addition, this method of growing has its own difficulties and difficulties: it is imperative to prevent self-pollination of the plant and to prevent insect pollination.
There is an option that will help to accomplish this task: before the flower begins to bloom, it needs to remove anthers, and put pollen taken from the father's plant on the stigma of the pestle. After this procedure, the plant should wear a so-called cover, which will serve as an obstacle to pollination by insects. The cover is usually made independently from fabric or paper, fastening is carried out just below the flower with the help of threads.
At the end of the ripening of the fruit, it is cut as accurately as possible, the seeds are taken out and left to dry for a couple of days.
layering
To plant their favorite varieties of indoor plants, sometimes they use the amazing ability of plants to take root even with little contact with the soil. Basically, ampelous and climbing plants have this ability.
Layers can be:
- by air
- horizontal
Horizontal
To get a new plant by the method of horizontal layering, you will need to choose a suitable twig, ensure its adherence to the ground with a hairpin, and sprinkle the place of contact with the soil. As a hairpin, you can use pieces of wire. Selected shoots must be strong.
Experts advise: to get better rooting at the point of contact of the twig with the ground, several small incisions should be made.
The best time to carry out such a procedure is the beginning of active plant growth, usually it begins with the onset of spring and lasts until the beginning of summer. Reproduction by horizontal layering can be used for ampelous varieties.
Aerial
This method is rational to use when propagating plants with thick sturdy stems. To obtain an air lay, stems that have matured should be selected; leaves should not be present at the point of layering.
On the surface of the stem, you should not make a deep incision, but even better - perform annular removal of the bark. Then you need to take a plastic bag, bind it below the notch, filling the resulting bag with moistened moss, you need to tie the second edge of the bag above the notch.
In the process of obtaining a layering, it will be necessary to constantly maintain the moisture of the moss. The formation of roots may take about a month and a half. Next, you need to cut the shoot lower than the pouch was tied. Remove the pouch carefully so as not to damage the roots. A new plant can be planted in a pot filled with soil.
propagation by cuttings
This option is suitable for breeding in the spring (late February to early March) or autumn (late August to early September) period. You can try this option in the summer, but the probability of cuttings decay is very high, because fuchsia does not tolerate heat very well.
For reproduction, it is better to choose young shoots. You can use the old ones, but their root system will take much longer to form than the young ones. The shoots about 20 centimeters high are immersed in a glass filled with water. Leaves located on the lower part of the appendage are torn off in advance, because when they are in the water, after some time, they will most likely begin to rot thereby destroying the appendix.
Deciduous cover located in the upper part of the sprout, it is also desirable to break off. If they are left, they will draw moisture and useful substances from the shoot that are very necessary for the shoot during this period. Feeding shoots in the water does not make sense. They will be able to start forming the root system fast enough.
There is another option for the propagation of fuchsia using cuttings. This option involves rooting directly in the soil, necessarily loose. In addition to the prepared soil, you will need not large containers, for example, plastic cups, in which rooting will take place.
Cuttings are placed in cups with soil so that the leaves located in the lower part do not come into contact with the soil and are not much higher. Planted cuttings moisturize. In addition to this, it is advisable to make a so-called greenhouse above each handle from small pieces of polyethylene or plastic glasses of the same kind that were used for planting. Greenhouse cuttings need to organize daily ventilation, which will help to avoid the formation of rot on them.
Over the next three to four weeks, roots will appear on the cuttings. Now it is time to accustom the plant to do without a greenhouse. This is done as follows: daily airing time gradually increases.
Cuttings should be left in a glass until the root system has completely filled it. After that, they make a pick in a larger container. But do not transplant into a flowerpot too big, fuchsia will not feel very well in a container with extra space.

Feeding Fuchsia
Fuchsia must be fed and fertilized. They love it very much. And if you do this constantly and in a timely manner, then the plant will delight the owner’s eye with its active growth and lush flowering.
At different stages of growth, it is necessary to use different fertilizers. Young plants need fertilizers with a high nitrogen content. It is nitrogen that promotes active growth of both shoots and foliage. After the plant has grown and strengthened a little, it needs to be fed with a complex, which includes potassium and phosphorus. They will help the plant to form a large number of buds and bloom for a long time.
Fertilize the earth with fuchsia strictly according to the recommendations. They, as well as the dosage, can be found in the literature or in the instructions for top dressing.
In the form of top dressing for fuchsia, it is worth using both mineral fertilizers and organic fertilizers in order.
When deciding on fertilizers, preference should be given to those, which include, in addition to the main ones, a variety of trace elements: zinc, manganese, magnesium, iron.
It is not necessary to feed plants recently transplanted, sick or weakened. Do not fertilize in dry soil. Feeding fuchsia is best done often, but not plentifully.
To increase resistance to a variety of pathogenic formations, the plant, periodically, should be sprayed with Epin-Extra.
Only in cases of proper and timely soil nutrition, spraying and watering can a healthy, properly developed, actively developing and abundantly flowering plant be grown.
How to keep fuchsia in winter
There are many ways to ensure a normal wintering of fuchsia. The storage option should be chosen depending on the plant variety, as well as on the ability to provide it with maximum comfort for the period of winter colds.
Many varieties are used for outdoor cultivation, but only frost-resistant ones can winter in the open ground, and even then under certain weather conditions. It should be borne in mind that even the natural endurance of a plant will not allow it to survive in the event of severe frosts (about 20 ° C), or complete drying out. Nevertheless, if weather conditions allow, then wintering on the street will be more favorable for the plant: it is more acceptable for the plant to survive frosts than a long stay in a warm, dimly lit room. Unstable to frost species retain in winter in greenhouse conditions.
For wintering in the open air the plant will need to be prepared carefully. With the onset of the first frosts, the plant is pruned, leaving shoots with a height of 5 to 10 cm.
If the plants are grown in hanging pots - they must be removed, lowered into a prepared hole, dripped and covered with a layer of peaty soil or fallen leaves, preferably oak. The layer thickness is at least 20 cm, then covered with spruce branches. Further, in order to avoid excessive soil moisture - cover with polyethylene.
If the weather conditions in winter are severe enough, then storage is best organized in the basement. With a decrease in temperature to +5 - +7 C, i.e. in late October and early November, plants are removed from the soil with a lump of earth and transferred to the basement, ideal - the temperature in it should also be within the specified limits.
You can also take advantage of the free space in the insulated garage, and the insulated balcony is suitable. There are no requirements for the level of illumination in this case, you can use both a dark and an illuminated room.
Another interesting option for organizing wintering is watching a video:
If for wintering there is no other place than the windowsill, it is better to use windows facing south, and to install pots with fuchsias as far as possible from the radiators. In this case, the illumination of the window sill will matter, a positive temperature will contribute to the slow growth of the shoots, but so that they do not stretch and are strong - you need enough light, you may need to organize lighting. The optimum temperature for this wintering option is +15 C.
If we talk about ideal conditions, then you should try to ensure wintering at a temperature from +5 C to +10 C. The plant stops growing completely, in a state of complete rest it does not need light.
It is important not to miss the moment when the temperature starts to rise - here already the illumination becomes important, if you do not maintain the light mode at a temperature of about +15 C, then by spring you will get elongated, pale and weak bushes.
Wintering on insulated balconies or loggias is as follows:
- plants are pruned
- while being left in drawers or pots,
- fall asleep with a thick layer of sawdust,
- throughout the winter periodically moisturize, preventing dryness.
By spring, with such storage, we get a strong, with a stiffened trunk plant. Young plants that are capable of active growth and flowering are obtained from rooted cuttings in autumn.
Note that for cultivation in an apartment, varieties capable of year-round flowering are often chosen.
How to accelerate the growth and beginning of flowering in spring
A variety of factors influence the onset of fuchsia blooms.
To ensure earlier flowering, you should know the most important of them:
- proper organization of wintering, mandatory compliance with temperature and humidity,
- timely holding of the last pinching, we take into account that the flowering will begin: in non-terry varieties - in 60 days, in semi-double varieties - in 70, in terry varieties in 80,
- temperature conditions, optimally - from + 16C to +22 C, with increasing temperature, increase air humidity and increase watering,
- high-quality lighting, best of all intense, but diffuse,
- landing in a container of sufficient volume, but not too large - in them fuchsia will not feel comfortable,
- do not apply too much nitrogen fertilizer, provoke active formation of buds and flowering phosphorus-potassium fertilizers,
- planting in a substrate of a suitable composition, the soil should not be too dense,
- watering should be moderate, and neither too dry nor too moist soil will contribute to bud formation.
At the time when the plant is forming buds, it is advisable to spray the plant with the composition of the Bud. It has a very positive effect on the development of buds and blooming flowers.
If the appearance of the buds is too late, do not be particularly upset - it is quite possible that you come across a late-blooming variety or plant, the flowers of which can only form when the shoots reach a certain length.
Fuchsia composition, how to create a fuchsia composition on a personal plot
Extremely bright islands created by blooming fuchsia bushes will delight the eye and attract attention in the most luxurious garden ensemble.
In addition, we note that fuchsia flowers can be plain and variegated, combining light and dark shades. And the color of the flowers can have a very wide color gamut, from snow-white to blue, bohemian lilac, lilac, pink, raspberry, purple.
One of the fashionable saturated shades of pink even bears the name of this amazing plant.
Fuchsia is a plant with amazingly beautiful flowers and graceful leaves, the plant stem has an intricate shape, the high decorative qualities of fuchsias make them very attractive in terms of landscaping the apartment, but you can also successfully decorate the facade of a country house or garden with fuchsias.
To create a composition of fuchsia in the open air, two options are used:
plants are removed from pots and planted in the ground,
containers with fuchsia are dug into the ground, removed in the fall, in the same containers leave bushes for wintering.
Fuchsia planted in large decorative flowerpots looks beautiful. You can also decorate a balcony or a gazebo with hanging baskets or containers with blooming fuchsias.
Details on how to make a floral arrangement with fuchsias - in the video:
The high demands of fuchsia for illumination in the humidity of the air and soil somewhat limit their use in creating flower beds or rabatok.
If we talk about the most suitable varieties for outdoor cultivation, then we should recall the three-leafed and Magellan fuchsia, it is resistant to frost, grows very quickly, blooms actively - in general, the plant meets all the requirements for crops used to create garden compositions.
About fuchsias grown in the garden - watch the video:
The most suitable time for planting fuchsia in the open ground is the end of May, after a couple of weeks the plants take root, then begin rapid growth and throw buds.
The flowering period of fuchsia is long, its flowering will serve as a bright decoration of the garden throughout the summer, usually until the beginning of October. Of course, if autumn colds do not come too early. It’s not scary if the plants are outside during the first frosts, they will transfer them calmly and get good hardening.
When composing a composition from different plants for fuchsia, it is desirable to select such neighbors who have the same requirements for light and soil moisture. Violation of the irrigation regime and too much drying out of the soil can cause the plant to drop buds.
It should be noted. that if fuchsia is grown in containers or pots, then rearrangement or rotation is highly undesirable, after such stress the plant can stop flowering.
