What is a folded roof, what you need to know about installing a folded roof
The choice of a roof for a home is an important and crucial stage in construction. Fortunately, today the building materials market offers a huge selection of a wide variety of roofing materials for every taste and request. In this article we will talk about the seam roof, consider its advantages and disadvantages, and also provide detailed installation instructions.

A little bit about the seam roof
The seam roof is called the coating, where adjacent elements are connected using seams. The seam connection, in turn, is a type of seam with which the metal roofing material is fastened together.
These compounds can be recumbent (A), upright (C), and also distinguish between a recumbent double (B) and a recumbent double (D). Standing joints are most often used for joints running along a slope, and lying joints for horizontal joints of sheets of roofing material. In this case, the double sealed connection is considered to be the most airtight.
The connections themselves are made either using a special self-locking fold, which is equipped with some materials for the roof, or using a manual or electromechanical tool.
What metals do folded roofs be made of?
The most inexpensive is the galvanized steel roofing. It is made of sheets with a thickness of 0.45-0.70 centimeters. At the same time, the service life of such a folded roof will be about 25-30 years.
More reliable and beautiful is considered a coating of that steel galvanized sheet, but already with a polymer coating. In this case, the material is the following multilayer structure: a zinc layer is applied to the steel sheet, and then a primer layer and a protective paint on the underside of the sheet. On the front side of the lcnf, a layer of colored polymer is applied, which performs a protective function and gives the roofing material a more aesthetic appearance.
Aluminum roofing is more durable and can last up to 80 years. In addition, this coating is not subject to deformation, as it is very resistant to temperature extremes.
The most expensive and reliable are folded roofs made of copper or zinc-titanium alloy. The zinc-titanium alloy roofing is available in the form of tapes or sheets, and it is based on modified zinc, which is characterized by corrosion resistance and ductility. Such a roof will serve faithfully until 100 years. However, we note that the installation of such material should be carried out only at an air temperature of more than +5 degrees.
Copper rebate coating can last 100 years or more. At the same time, due to the fact that copper is quite easy to solder, installation of such a roof will not cause significant difficulties.
Advantages and disadvantages of the seam roof
Like any roofing, the seam has a number of advantages and disadvantages. The main advantages of seam roofing include:
- Reliability. By the way, this same reliability has been tested and appreciated at facilities such as Ski Dubai, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and even Shelter-2 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, also performed using a fold roof.
- Tightness. The fact is that, unlike other types of coatings, the fold does not have through fasteners.
- Durability. The service life of such coatings can be from 50 years for galvanized and more than 100 years for copper and aluminum.
- A smooth surface on which neither water nor snow linger.
- Light weight. So, 1 square meter accounts for from 3.5 to 7.2 kilograms of coating weight.
- The presence of anti-corrosion coating.
- Affordable price. The cost of such a coating is lower than the cost of ceramic tiles, but more than the cost of metal. In general, the cost of a folded coating can be compared with the price of a bitumen roof.
- Classical beauty.
Disadvantages of the folded roof:
- The complexity of installation.
- Weak soundproofing properties.
- Inexpensive roof made of galvanized steel, significantly inferior in its aesthetic indicators to roofs made of zinc-titanium or copper. But the latest materials are expensive.
- The need to equip a lightning rod. This is due to the fact that the seam roof accumulates electrostatic stress.
Installation of a fold roof
There are two ways to install the seam roof modern and traditional. The latter is being used less and less by builders. However, we will consider both options.
traditional installation of the seam roof
So, with the traditional installation of the seam roof at the first stage, we will need to start making paintings.
The paintings are elements of a roofing material, the edges of which are prepared to create seam joints.
At this stage, it will be necessary for us, armed with a drawing of the roof, to make paintings for covering slopes, overhangs, gutters and other parts of the roof.
The edges of our blanks-paintings need to be bent, so prepared to create seam connections.
At the second stage, we raise our blanks to the roof and connect the parts to each other using the standing fold method.
After this, the picture must be attached to the crate with the help of clamps.
In this case, one end of the clamps must be folded, and the other attached to the battens.
I would like to draw your attention to the following: if sheets longer than 10 meters are used for roofing, it is better to fasten them to the crate with the help of floating clamps.
In this case, the coating will not lose tightness under thermal deformations.
The last step is to install galvanized steel aprons on all openings.
modern technology of seam roof mounting
As for the modern technology of installing the seam roof, then more and more often resort to the roll technology of arranging the coating.
In this case, the material delivered to the construction site in rolls is already cut in place by special equipment. Due to this, there is no need to create horizontal joints of sheets, which can significantly increase the tightness of the roof.
The connection between the paintings is carried out by means of an electromechanical device that performs a double standing seam. You can also resort to the help of silicone sealant, which will also provide additional sealing.
Of the main advantages of this method of mounting the folded roof can be noted:
- The ability to make sheets of any length convenient for you.
- Joining patterns with a double standing seam without the need for transverse joints.
- Roofing material can be profiled directly at the construction site using a mobile rolling mill.
- Hookless fastening to any crate with hidden clamps. Thanks to this, a complete tightness of the roof is achieved.
The main nuances when installing a seam roof
The main points that you should not forget about when arranging a fold roof:
- When using folding technology, the roof slope should be more than 14 degrees, otherwise it is necessary to take care of installing a solid base. Also in this case, it will be necessary to use a double fold and silicone sealant when connecting the paintings
- The crate on which the rebate roof will be laid should have a certain step. As a rule, during construction, 50x50 bars are used with a step of 25 centimeters. If the required step is not followed, the steel sheets may begin to bend, which will lead to weakening and deformation of the joints.
- When using sheets over 10 meters, it is necessary to use floating clamps.
- When installing a zinc-titanium roof, the material must be handled with extreme care, as deep scratches can cause corrosion even before the patination process.
- When buying a roof in rolls, you need to make sure that the circle is the same thickness of the sheets. Also, it will not be superfluous to demand from the seller a certificate with the technical characteristics of the material indicated in it.
