Decorative leafy begonias
The modern assortment of begonias is very large, and new varieties are constantly appearing, striking in their diversity. It would seem that these are domestic flowers, but many varieties are able to bloom all year round - in the summer on the street, and in the autumn in the house, there they delight with their bloom all winter.
Decorative leafy begonias are varied in the colors of leaves and shapes.
At home, metallic, imperial, spotted, red-leaf begonias feel great.
These are perennial varieties, they have very large leaves and stems.
Begonia Care
Caring for these plants at home and in the summer is not difficult: in the summer, water abundantly, feed them once every two weeks (they respond well to feeding with a weak solution of fermented grass), and protect them from direct sunlight.
Begonia soil is light, nutritious; drainage is necessarily put on the bottom of the pot. It is impossible to spray begonia on the leaves, but since they require high humidity, it is good to place glasses with water between pots with begonia, when grown at home.
After watering, the soil needs to be slightly loosened.
Begonias do not like when they are often rearranged from place to place, it is necessary to put the pots so that the leaves of one plant do not touch another. Home begonias are afraid of drafts and in severe frosts, remove them from window sills on the table.
In winter, begonias are watered less often, but do not clean the cups with water from the pots, as dry air comes from the battery.
Begonia propagation
Decorative leafy begonias are propagated by cuttings and leaves, they are very easily rooted either in a peat tablet or placed in a container of water. A bush of decorative leafy begonia looks good for 2-3 years, then it begins to fall apart - this is a signal of the need for transplantation and division.
Best of all, these begonias grow in ceramic pots, look great when breeding at home on the window, in the garden, landscape designers, from such begonias create magnificent compositions.
The healing properties of begonia
Begonia flowers are real healers, they have an active antiviral effect.
When grown at home, they absorb toxins from the air, help improve cardiac activity, admiring the begonia flowers and beautiful leaves of this magnificent plant - the mood rises.
Begonia ever flowering
Begonia is ever-flowering, otherwise always-flowering - not tired blooms all year round with minimal care, it is also a perennial plant. She easily adapts to room conditions, also feels great in the open ground.
Modern breeders have grown new varieties of this begonia with flowers of different colors - different shades of pink, cream, red and white. Her leaves are shiny, of different colors: green, dark red, burgundy.
Using different color of leaves, landscape designers create colorful flower beds.
This begonia is not high, up to 30 centimeters, the bush is highly branched, and the stems are juicy and fragile. If the shoots are extended after winter, they can be cut into cuttings, feed the bush and the begonia will bloom again magnificent, and the cuttings quickly give roots, even in plain water.
Around the bushes of ever-flowering begonia planted in the ground, it is good to mulch the soil with expanded clay or small pebbles.
He prefers frequent watering, he does not like drying out the soil, but he can’t fill it either, when grown in a pot, the roots can rot.
When the flower is pollinated, a seed box is formed, with very small seeds, they have excellent germination, when they are sown in late January, the plants will bloom in August-September. Begonia always flowering is not afraid of heat, nor wind, nor rain.
Tuber begonia
The beauty of blooming tuberous begonia can compete with the beauty of blooming roses. These flowers bloom very luxuriously, they are good in containers, in the ground, when planting in curbs - they have a place everywhere, tolerate heat well, but are afraid of the wind.
Tuber Begonia Care
Powerful, strong, very juicy stems often grow on which magnificent, bright flowers flaunt, from a distance they can be confused with a rose flower.
So that the wind does not break them, the pots are placed in partial shade against a wall or under a tree, be sure to strengthen the high stems of the begonia, substitute props and tie the stems to them.
When grown in a container, drainage is placed on the bottom of the pot, the soil should be loose, light, fertile.
Watering is required plentiful, but it is impossible to fill, fertilize well once every ten days with fermented grass.
When planting in a pot, only one tuber is planted, the soil above the tuber is not more than two centimeters, you can simply sprinkle the tuber on the sides without falling asleep, otherwise the plant will bloom poorly.
Since the begonia roots are located close to the surface of the earth, the soil cannot be loosened, you can add dry humus after watering.
Tuberous begonias bloom to frost, when the temperature drops to plus five degrees, the pots are brought into the room, if the tubers are planted directly in the garden, they need to be dug.
Winter content of tuberous begonias
After the pots with begonias brought into the room, watering stops. Flowers gradually fall, the leaves begin to wither, the stems dry.
You can separate the dry stems, remove the tubers from the ground and dry them for three days under the natural conditions of the house, put them in a box, sprinkle the tubers with dry sand and put on the floor in a cool place until February.
In mid-February, remove the tubers, peel off the old roots, disinfect in a dark pink solution of potassium permanganate or phytosporin, then dry and put on a shelf until sprouts appear.
After filling the peat cups with light soil, put a nod on it without pressing it or deepening it.
If the tuber is large, and has several sprouts, it can be divided, like potato tuber when planting. Large begonia tuber is cut into several parts (there must be a sprout on each part), slices are sprinkled with crushed coal.
Begonia propagation by seeds
When propagating begonias by seeds, with careful care, you can get a lot of planting material.
At the end of January - at the beginning of February, a plastic transparent box with a lid is taken, holes are made in the bottom for water drainage, drainage is made from small pebbles, which is filled in light, with fine sand added, without lumps of homogeneous soil, a layer of two centimeters.
Seeds are treated with a dark solution of potassium permanganate for 30 minutes, then the seeds are dried to flowability and planted in the ground.
In order to see the seeds, a little snow is poured on the surface of the earth, seeds are placed on it with a toothpick at a distance of 5 cm from each other, the box is closed with a lid and put on a shelf, at a temperature of 20-25 degrees.
Shoots appear on days 7-14.
Immediately transfer the capacity to the lightest window.
The earth must be constantly moist, otherwise with the slightest drying, the seedlings will die, it is necessary to water from a pipette.
In order for the condensate on the lid to drain sideways and not destroy the seedlings, put a pencil under one edge of the planting container.
Gradually accustom seedlings to fresh air, start airing from five minutes a day, then to fifteen minutes.
When the first pairs of true leaves are formed, seedlings dive.
During the summer, tubers with a diameter of 1.5-2 centimeters grow, are stored as well as large ones. The next summer, the plant blooms.
