How to insulate a brick house. How to insulate brick walls with your own hands outside? Why is it necessary to isolate the wall surface from the temperature effects of the external environment
If you have been dreaming about your home for a long time: cozy, made of bricks, with thick, strong and necessarily warm walls, then this article is what you need! It will be about the warming of the walls of brick houses. And you will find out why it is important to insulate the walls of a brick house and how to do it more optimally and correctly, minimizing the cost of building the entire house.

Why insulate a brick house?
Do I need to insulate a brick house? The question is very relevant today. And, indeed, before, after all, brick houses were built, without the use of any modern heaters, and nothing! Brick houses were already the warmest! And it really was. What has changed now? The brick remained the same, why not build warm houses out of it even without insulation?
It is possible but, it’s very expensive and irrational, for today’s time, pleasure, because:
- brick material is not the cheapest, but in order for a house with brick walls to be really warm without using modern wall insulation technologies, the brick wall itself should be at least 72-75 cm (at least 4 bricks thick!), if you look on old houses and old construction GOSTs.
- A thick brick wall is not only expensive, but also a heavy structure, therefore, the load on the foundation increases. And this, again, is the extra cost of organizing the foundation, the amount of materials and time required for it.
That is why it is easier and faster to use modern technologies in the construction of brick houses, as before, solid, capital, but somewhat lightweight construction, and, from this, even warmer. And all thanks to modern technologies of warming a brick house.
Insulation of the walls of a brick house: what and how better
What is better to insulate a brick house? Indeed, there are many types of thermal insulation materials: moisture-resistant and easy to install, environmentally friendly and affordable.
As a matter of fact, everyone answers the question: how to insulate a brick house in the best way? Everyone chooses himself from the available options and materials used for thermal insulation of the walls of the house.
There are several types of insulation of brick walls, as, indeed, of any other house:
- insulation of walls from the inside, i.e. directly in the living room. You can insulate the walls from the inside with mineral wool, polystyrene foam, ecowool, expanded polystyrene foam, with the construction of a frame and subsequent sewing of the walls with sheets of drywall or plywood
And although there is a place to be this way of wall insulation, but, more often, it is used as an additional version of the main insulation. This is because the insulation of walls from the inside of a room cannot, by definition, be thick enough not to steal a useful living area, which means that such insulation of the brick walls of the house will not make warm enough.
- insulation of the walls of a brick house in the process of their construction. How to insulate the walls of a brick house in this way? By using the same heat-insulating materials as in the case of wall insulation from the inside, although foam, expanded polystyrene, or expanded clay concrete can also be used. Only the insulation is placed between two walls of brickwork: load-bearing, thick, this is the main wall of the house and the wall of facing brick is the facade wall of the house.
- insulation of walls outside:the best option for warming the walls of a brick house, because can be produced, if desired, at any time. That is, even when the house is completely ready, and possibly had wall insulation, which turned out to be insufficient. Mineral wool or polystyrene foam (polystyrene) acts as a heater, but its fastening and the subsequent organization of the facade of a brick house require special attention.
Insulation of the walls of a brick house outside: types
How to insulate a brick house outside?
There are several options to do this:
- insulate brick walls with the help of the construction of a ventilated facade:
Insulation (panels, polystyrene foam is more often used, since it is not susceptible to moisture, although mineral or stone wool is also possible (by the way, manufacturers of the ventilated facade system recommend them more often, referring to the combustibility of expanded polystyrene).
The technology is as follows: outside, a frame of special galvanized or aluminum profiles is erected on the walls (they are specially designed for the installation of ventilated facades and have special fasteners for the final cladding, which can be either ceramic granite slabs, glass, plastic, metal, fiber cement). The insulation is attached to the brick wall using special glue or facade dowel nails (umbrella), in one or 2 layers, depending on the desired degree of insulation. A vapor barrier is mounted on top of the insulation. But, the thickness of the insulation layer should not be equal to the distance from the wall of the house to the final cladding. There should be a gap, which provides ventilation of the facade and insulation, so that the humidity of the insulation is optimal, and the walls become not only warm, but also quite well soundproofed.
A cheap and fairly long-used option of a ventilated facade, if one can be called such, is the insulation of brick walls with mineral wool on a frame of wooden bars,
followed by a vapor barrier membrane and sewing with plastic.
This is a fairly quick and easy way to insulate the facade of a brick house, but less durable and aesthetic: plastic lining does not go to any comparison with porcelain. But, in practice, it serves up to 10 years.
- to insulate the walls of a brick house with the help of the construction of a multilayer cake or a thermal fur coat.
This option of warming the walls of a brick, and not only house, has been widely used recently in both private and standard multi-apartment construction, as cheaper than installing ventilated facades, but, for quality and long-term insulation, it requires some building skills.
The essence of the whole process of insulation is as follows: polystyrene is attached to the surface of a brick wall, previously primed, with glue and / or using wall dowels-nails. The thickness of the insulation layer depends on how warm the house should be: from 5 to 20 cm. And then it all depends on what needs to be done: just stick and grasp the insulation lined with tiles on the dowel-nails
or build a full-fledged thermo-fur coat: the insulation is reinforced with fiberglass mesh, its surface is plastered, and subsequently, a finishing layer of decorative plaster and facade paint is applied. Plaster, in this case, is also an additional layer of insulation.
Do-it-yourself insulation of the walls of a brick house outside
How to insulate the facade of a brick house and how to properly insulate a brick house, serious issues, but, if desired, quite solvable, because if you want and have the skills, you can do it yourself:
- ventilated facade
- wall insulation polystyrene foam
