What needs to be waterproofed
In order to prevent the pouring of neighbors in the event of any flood, it is necessary, when repairing or installing the bathroom, to waterproof the floor and walls to a height of at least 10 cm around the perimeter of the entire room.
In the case of installation of shower enclosures, as well as in places where the bathtub adjoins the wall, the adjoining walls are waterproofed to the full height to the ceiling.
Foamy and coating waterproofing of the bathroom - the most common ways to prevent the pouring of neighbors.
Waterproofing waterproofing
Any waterproof coating made of several layers of film, roll, or sheet materials of factory manufacture, during the installation of which special glue is used, is called gluing waterproofing.
When installing such insulation, waterproofing materials, like any rolled material, are overlapped.
When connecting the strata with each other, the method of heating the bonded surfaces with a gas burner is used. But since bathrooms in stationary houses have a small area, in addition to this, the heating process requires special equipment and is not too safe - this method is a thing of the past.
Currently, the market for building materials, has a fairly large selection of various adhesives that are designed for waterproofing works.
Moreover, some of them do not require heating, such materials include polyurethane adhesive mastic (Unigex-2). This mastic has the advantage of a fairly simple use: you just need to mix the two components - and the glue is ready.
Using a conventional comb (toothed) spatula, a uniform layer of mastic is applied to the edge of the roll material, and then the next coating sheet is overlapped onto the edge of the roll material. The waterproofing created with Unigex-2 has double protection against water, since the polyurethane mastic Unigex-2 is also a sealant.
Such waterproofing is quite reliable, but its use is possible only for a relatively flat surface (roughnesses of less than 2 mm are permissible.), In addition, there is a problem of careful installation of waterproofing at the joints between the floor and the wall, especially when you do it yourself and there is no experience.
Coating waterproofing
Such insulation is a single-layer or multi-layer coating, the thickness of which is from 1 mm. up to a few centimeters.
Such a coating is created by using a plastic material that is applied to an insulated surface.
Mixtures based on various materials are used for coating waterproofing: bituminous mastics, bitumen-polymer, polyurethane, MS-polymer, or polymer mixtures.
Polymer mixtures, compared with pure bitumen, have several advantages. Polymer mixtures are rather heat-resistant, in comparison with bitumen, which, with temperature fluctuations, is prone to cracking, in addition, polymer mixtures do not undergo biological corrosion, do not emit harmful substances, and do not have an unpleasant odor.
Unlike black bitumen, polymers have a more aesthetic appearance, since the surface treated with this composition acquires a blue or light gray hue.
Coating waterproofing can be applied to almost any surface: both uneven and wet, it is possible to apply an insulated base to any material.
The advantage of applying coating waterproofing is saving in finances, in time, does not require special skills.
Concrete screed
After applying waterproofing, it is required to fill the concrete screed. In this case, the crucial point is the choice of material
Because of economy, they often use ordinary cement-sand mixtures as a screed, but these mixtures do not contain additives that accelerate the hardening of cement and have a long curing time. The desire to save money leads to the fact that you have to wait 28 days before applying the finish coat.
The thickness of the cement screed must be at least 40 mm. To prevent cracking on the surface, the screed can be reinforced. For this, before pouring the screed, a metal or plastic mesh with a cell of 100x100x5 is stretched on the floor surface, then a self-leveling mixture is poured on top.
In order to reduce the time of building up the screed strength, sand-cement mixtures with polymer additives should be used, the use of such mixtures reduces the waiting time to 2-3 days.
But this is not the limit, the fastest result is the use of self-leveling mixtures, for example, ROXOL XPS.
The use of these mixtures allows you to speed up the hardening, after 1 hour you can walk on it, and after 4 hours - paint and apply the next coating.
Using additives GAMBIT SUPER MIXT (C-1) creates additional waterproofing. The finished screed is maintained until the required strength is set, then proceed to laying the coating.
A kind of floor in the bathroom
The classic version of flooring in the bathroom, using ceramic tiles, has recently become a thing of the past, giving way to new products in the construction and finishing market.
The most interesting of modern materials include bulk 3D floors and special anti-slip coatings Stone carpet. They are not inferior in any way, and sometimes even surpass traditional tiles in aesthetics, and in functional qualities, these coatings have a number of advantages: they are more durable, not slippery, have a monolithic structure, thereby enhancing waterproofing.
bulk floor
A bulk floor is a coating based on a self-leveling polymer mixture, which is applied to the created waterproofing of the floor. A feature of the bulk floor is its thickness, only 2-3 mm.
3D floors
One of the options for bulk floors are 3D floors. This is a multilayer polymer coating, it is made on a perfectly aligned surface onto which an artistic image is glued, then it is covered with a special varnish.
Highly filled epoxies (Fortified-111) are usually used as a finishing varnish and for leveling the surface, they give the desired strength and absolute evenness along the horizon.
The use of epoxy resins creates the effect of glass - this is extremely important in the manufacture of 3D floors.
The second version of the finish layer is possible - a special polyurethane compound Strengthened-Paul, this is a rubber-like coating, characterized by high strength and wear resistance.
A big plus is that it is warm to the touch and does not require the installation of warm floors.
anti-slip floor (Stone carpet)
The next type of bulk floor is Stone carpet, also a multi-layer coating, reminiscent of a 3D floor device.
Instead of an artistic drawing, colored quartz sand is also used, which is also flooded with epoxy resin (Fortified-111). This coating allows any color options, the texture of the coating depends on the fraction of quartz sand.
The advantage of such a floor is that it is absolutely non-slippery, not traumatic and this gives it a certain primacy over other coatings.
Waterproofing joints in the bathroom
In order to avoid leaks, the bathroom needs high-quality waterproofing of the walls at the places where the bathtub adjoins the wall and when installing shower cabins, especially open types.
Here you can also use gluing and coating waterproofing, but modern experienced craftsmen use waterproofing tapes or special sealants, such as Bostik 2720MS, which are developed on the basis of MS-technologies.
This sealant is easy to apply, has high adhesion to any material, high resistance to high humidity and temperature fluctuations. Available in five colors, if desired, it can be painted.
If the surface of the walls is supposed to be covered with tiles, it is better to use Quelyd Stop Water and Aqua Blocker waterproofing materials, since they, due to their special structure, based on MS polymers, act simultaneously as a waterproofing material (first layer) and as glue for a tile (second layer).
The weak point in the bathroom is the seams between the tiles in the cladding, especially at the joints and corners. Usually cement-sand mixes are used for their grouting, but if you add the GAMBIT Super MIXT (С-1) additive, which has waterproofing properties, to the grout, it will increase the durability of the tile coating several times.
Advice
- for waterproofing floors and walls, use materials such as Aqua Blocker, GAMBIT Hydroacryl (D-1) - they provide vapor barrier, and this is necessary to prevent the penetration of steam into the walls, their getting wet. Steam is removed from the room by ventilation;
- for quick screed pouring, use ROXOL XPS self-leveling mixture;
- use reinforcing, metal or plastic mesh with a cell 40x40, to prevent the formation of cracks in the screed;
- as the finishing layer, when creating 3D floors, use epoxy resins (Fortified-111), since they have the effect of glass, visually give depth to the layer, make the picture voluminous;
- to increase the life of the tiles in the bathroom, add a little bit of grout (GAMBIT Super MIXT (C-1). Additives require only 30 grams per 1 kg of grout.
