Types of Bird Feeders
There are quite a few varieties of feeders, however, they all perform the same function and serve as a dining table for birds. Feeders are distinguished by the types of materials from which they are made, by the size and breed of birds for which they are intended. The last difference must be taken into account if several species of birds settled in the garden at once, and some of them are predators, while others are peaceful birds. Plastic bottle feeder
To equip a bird's dining area, it is not necessary to buy special materials. As a building material, an ordinary plastic bottle or can is perfect. A bird bottle feeder is made in just 15 minutes and the feathered brother is happy to peck the feed that has been poured into it.
To make a feeder, it is advisable to take a larger bottle, so the birds will not be too crowded. Near the lid you need to cut or pierce a couple of holes for the rope, on which the feeder will be suspended from the branches of a tree. On the sides of the bottle you need to make inlets. It is desirable that the entrance for the birds is more spacious and therefore it is necessary to penetrate at least 1/3 of the total height of the tank. The height of the inlet from the bottom of the bottle should be at least 5 cm, this will allow the feed not to crumble when the feeder is rocking.
For this type of feeder, a special perch is needed, which the birds will hold on to during the feeding. Any straight branch or stick is suitable as a perch. The length of the branch should correspond to the size of the feeder and protrude on each side by 5-10 cm. To fix it is very simple, you just need to make small holes under the inlet holes on both sides and insert a branch into them.
Grain is poured into the resulting product and the feeder is hung out in any place convenient for the bird brethren.
Box feeder
A cardboard box is also perfect for arranging a bird's dining room. The only thing worth considering is the life of the craft. Cardboard is able to withstand only one winter season and when spring and rainfall, the product will be damaged forever. But as a winter option, a cardboard box is perfect.
The bird feeder out of the box is quick and easy. You need to take a small oblong box and cut holes in the side walls to get inside. As with a plastic bottle, the holes should be cut just above the bottom level (5cm), this will allow the feed not to spill out. Suspending such a feeder is a little uncomfortable, since the paper base will tear very quickly and the box will fall down. Therefore, it is better to fix it in a fork in the branches and pull it with twine to the tree trunk. If there are no suitable forks, then in this case, you can pass the lace through the top of the box to fix it on a branch. In order to fill the feed was convenient, you can cut the top of the box on three sides and make an impromptu lid, which can be fixed with adhesive tape.
In the same way, you can arrange the feeder from a plastic box or container. Plastic will last much longer than cardboard and it is much easier to fix it on the branches of a tree.
DIY wooden bird feeder
If you have free time and the necessary materials, you can make a beautiful and convenient bird feeder yourself.
Any construction work, even if it’s just a bird’s house for food, must be prepared in advance. In this case, it is necessary to draw a drawing of the bird feeder and determine the size of the product.
There are no special rules and requirements for the drawings. On paper, you can draw an approximate version of the feeder and then put down the dimensions of the parts. Visualization is needed in order to carefully work out all the details and calculate the material consumption.
The simplest version of the feeder, for the manufacture of which no specific knowledge is required, has a rectangular shape, without a conical roof for drainage of moisture.
You can use any wood as the material, the main thing is that it is not too heavy, otherwise your structure risks falling from the branch to someone’s head. For a simple feeder, which was mentioned above, it is necessary to cut two identical canvases of wood. This will be the bottom and roof of the feeder.
Next, you need to file the racks on which the roof will be held. Whetstones on racks can be made the same in height. And you can cut them so that the roof during installation turned out to be slightly sloping. To do this, cut two bars one size at a time, and reduce the remaining two by 2-3cm. Then, in bad weather, moisture will drain unhindered from the roof of the feeder.
To make a bird feeder, you need a few more details. In order for the food not to spill out onto the ground, you need to make bumpers. These parts should not be too large. Ideally, the height of the side should not exceed 5cm. This is quite enough to protect the feed from natural disasters in the form of wind gusts.
The dimensions of the sides are calculated based on the distance between the uprights, and not according to the length and width of the base.
You can connect the entire structure into a single whole using self-tapping screws. Moreover, they need to be buried as thoroughly as possible in order to exclude the possibility that the bird will get hurt. A bird feeder made of wood is usually made of wood with a thickness of not more than 15-20 mm. If the wooden blanks are thicker, the product will turn out to be too heavy and tree branches may not withstand such a load.
Special food for poultry is sold in many pet stores, but usually dry bread crumbs, seeds, millet and even ordinary bacon are put in the feeder, which is happily peeled by birds.
