Decorative sills and dock profiles: what is it
Repair, as you know, begins with the selection of the main material, and ends with trifles. And these little things, sometimes, are the main, dominant, factor in the success of all the work done. In relation to the floor, such important details are skirting boards, decorative sills and dock profiles. Indeed, it is thanks to them that you can mask cracks and gaps, which, without fail, should be when laying floating floors and joining floors with different laying methods and materials.
We will consider in detail two options for designing joints of floor coverings:
- decorative sills,
- docking profiles.
Often these two concepts interchange, considering synonyms, but this is not entirely true. Decorative plank (docking) is a special case of using a docking profile, because only the lower part of the doorway can be called a nut.
In other cases, when joining floor coverings located outside the doorway, we are talking about the docking profile.
In our article, we allow ourselves to adhere to the more familiar name decorative sills.
Decorative thresholds and connecting profiles: types
There are several types of classifications of decorative thresholds (profiles):
- by profile type:
- T-profile
- P-profile
- C profile
- G profile
- Z profile.
It is worth noting that the last two types of profiles, in metal design, are more often used as a design for a smooth and almost imperceptible transition from tile to laminate: joint of tile and laminate.
- according to the material from which they are made:
- Plastic or PVC sills / profiles: used for joining linoleum, laminate, carpet. Due to the wide variety of color solutions, the ability to design curved joints with this decorative profile, and affordability in price, they are very widespread. Their only drawback is their fragility: the plastic is worn, broken, and cracked. Although, in this case, such sills and profiles are very easy to replace with similar new ones.
- Metal sills / profiles: the most fashionable, popular and durable, because they are made of aluminum, brass and steel. The most popular, in terms of price and quality, is the aluminum floor threshold: it does not rust, is easily decorated in an industrial environment, under bronze, silver and gold, or laminated under a tree (or any other pattern).
- Wooden sills are made from an array of different tree species. Naturally, it is most logical to use such sills for joining and decorating a floor made of wood or parquet. Wooden sills require the same personal care as a wooden or parquet floor. The cost is also significantly higher than average, especially if they are made of quality material.
- Cork sills are a cork rail with high cushioning properties, for this reason the docking profile from the cork is used as a compensating profile / seam. Variations in color and shape of cork profiles are also very large, although they are used mainly when joining parquet.
- Powders / profiles of their MDF: they are used mainly as thresholds for a laminate, like a laminate, to be afraid of moisture and water, which makes their service life significantly reduced. Although their price is very low.
- Rubber sills are made either of rubber, completely, or have the appearance of an aluminum sill / profile, with a rubber insert. More functional than decorative, as they are used, more often, as anti-slip coatings for steps and ceramic tiles.
- according to the function that is assigned to them:
- Leveling sills: make the transition between coatings of different heights smoother. It is used in the design of joints of such materials, for example, carpet and tile.
- T-profile: masks joints between coatings of the same height, can be straight or curved.
- Final Nut / Profile:it is the finishing touch for the design of steps, podiums, and also fixes the flooring at the doors.
- Leveling threshold for hard floors:a durable way to join hard coatings (tiles, wood, laminate, parquet) of different heights.
- by type of attachment of decorative sills / profiles:
- Flush Mount
- Open mounting.
