Edged board, choose correctly, useful tips
Lumber is a product obtained from wood by sawing logs. Sawing is performed by special enterprises - sawmills. The use of special machines allows cutting of various types, the processing methods of lumber are divided into two main types: with fully or partially trimmed edge and with uncut at all. The quality of the material is determined by the type of processing and the number of flaws in the wood cover. The length of the lumber is negotiated directly with the customer, but cannot be longer than 6.5 m with an error of up to 0.25 m. If necessary, make a cut longer than 6.5 m, make up a special contract. Lumber is recorded in cubic meters.

Edged board
The thickness of edged lumber can be in the range from 8 to 100 mm, the width should be at least double the thickness. Boards are cut out from the bars necessary for cutting thickness or from logs, apply:
- for the manufacture of wooden furniture,
- it performs finishing work indoors,
- boxes and formwork are made from it, parquet flooring is made and so on.
As already mentioned, all boards are divided into two types: trimmed and uncut, in other words with a processed side edge and unprocessed. There is also a type called croaker - a board in which only one surface is processed.
There is a difference between the boards and their thickness. Most in demand are boards with a thickness of 30 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm, 125 mm. Sawing the board to the desired thickness can be done regardless of whether it is cut or not.
A board with side edges not cut, that is, not cut, is most often used for:
- crate production
- various coverings,
- as well as for the manufacture of fragments of supporting structures, i.e. Designed for work where the appearance of the material is not of particular importance.

Factors Affecting Board Quality
The main parameter for cutting uncircumcised boards is its quality. A low quality cut can be obtained due to the presence of chips and potholes on the material, which greatly complicate the work with it and worsen the external condition.
The presence of knots significantly reduces the strength of uncut boards when processing this type. Knots present often lead to deformation of the lumber. The quality of the uncut board is determined by the small number of knots and their small size.
Edged board - sizes
The first sign of edged lumber is the absence of a border with a bark on the sides of the board. According to accepted standards, a small error in cutting is allowed, but it should be minimal and normalized.
Edged boards can have different dimensions, with a standard length of 6 m, its width can range from 75 to 275 mm, and thickness - from 15 to 75 mm. Edged boards are sawn from different species of wood.
The size of the edged board is calculated as follows: a x b x l. For example: 50 mm x 150 mm x 6000 mm, where 50 mm is the smaller side (a), 150 mm is the larger side of the transverse cut (b), 6000 mm is the length of the board (l) /.
Classification of edged boards
Classification is based on accepted standards. The grade of cut boards depends on the presence of knots and their dimensions, as well as on the distance at which such flaws are located from each other. In principle, the presence of flaws on a board or beam does not particularly affect their bearing qualities. On the other hand, their quantitative presence creates certain problems when builders work with this kind of material and, as a result, the estimate for the work performed increases. Quite often, the knots, after a certain time, begin to crumble, forming a through hole that leaves an irreparable negative mark on the finish.
Depending on the number and complexity of the defects, the material is sorted. For example, an edged larch board, depending on the presence of resin pockets and healthy knots, as well as not through cracks, the width of which is within 2-5 mm, is divided into three varieties:
- perfect - if there is a maximum of 1 defect per running meter,
- the first - in the presence of irregularities and pockets, not falling out knots, blueing up to 1/4 of the area of \u200b\u200bthe whole board,
- second grade - there may be dropping out knots, through cracks, pockets, dents.

Experts recommend identifying and selecting cut boards of low quality even before the start of construction work, because replacing a defective board after installation is almost impossible.
Quite often, lumber loses strength and is deformed due to improper storage conditions or under the influence of moisture, for example, at the time of transportation. There are frequent cases of violations or changes in the technology of drying wooden materials at wood processing enterprises, which no less adversely affect the quality of lumber.
In cases where the cutting of the edged board occurs on improperly configured cutting equipment, in addition also at high speed, in each batch of boards a very large percentage of the spread in the dimensions of the finished products can be obtained. After such a cut, the boards can be different in length and thickness. The construction process from such material will be practically impossible - it is very difficult to fit such boards in relation to each other. For example, gaps may form between the boards or, when constructing a support base from them, it may turn out that the length of the boards is much less than what is needed.
To choose a good supplier of cut boards, you need to:
- carefully study the fixed standards inherent in each class of lumber,
- select boards based on pricing and desired quality.
Quite often you have to change your choice in favor of material from another species of wood. This is much easier than picking edged lumber from the same type of wood, but higher class.
Edged board - how many pieces in a cube
When calculating and buying boards, this question often arises. To determine how many boards a cube of a cut board holds, the easiest way is to use tables. They contain information about the cubature of the most popular sizes of edged boards and timber.
To calculate the volume of boards with other parameters, for example, those that are used in the construction of the fence, you can use the formula that we mentioned above, which consists in finding the product of the three measurements of the board:
- width
- heights
- lengths.
For the convenience of calculations, each of the parameters is converted into meters. Using the result and finding out the cost of one cubic meter, you can get the price of one board. These simple procedures will help to calculate the volume of the edged board that will be required to perform a specific job and find out the amount of money that you will need to spend on the purchase of lumber.
How to choose a trim board for carpentry
Cut lumber, the most popular type of boards in carpentry. Before you stop choosing one or another type of material, you need to pay attention to the type of wood of which the board is made. The strongest and best is edged coniferous board, the source material for the manufacture of which was coniferous wood. Especially worth highlighting are sawn boards from Siberian pine. Only they do not undergo a process of decay for an extended period of time.
Assessing the condition of the board by external qualities should not be noticeable on the surface of cracks and plaque. When buying a large batch of cut pine boards, there is no way to carefully examine the condition of all the material. In this case, proceed as follows: take one of the first planks in the party and carefully examine its surface. When making such an inspection, one should not forget about the number of knots present, because they greatly complicate the work of the joiners.
The high quality of the edged board guarantees its flat surface and straightness. Quality also guarantees the absence of torsion of the material along the entire length. In addition to this, a quality board is sawed only from well-dried material. This ensures the same thickness of the board over its entire length. When making a purchase, it is worth checking with the seller: whether the material is treated with a special composition that protects from insects. If the material is processed, then the choice is definitely worth stopping on it.
