What is drywall
Drywall is a universal finishing material, it is implemented in the form of sheets, each of them consists of a dense cardboard, which serves as a surface layer, and a filler of gypsum mixture with special additives that provide additional strength to the material.
Relatively light weight and ease of transportation, ease of handling and installation, environmental friendliness and low cost drywall caused its popularization and widespread use in construction and repair work during the construction of:
- false ceilings
- arches and partitions,
- various architectural structures of complex shape.
One of the most popular manufacturers of drywall is the German concern Knauf.
Varieties of Knauf drywall
Depending on the future operating conditions of the facing material, you should choose a certain type of drywall. There are several varieties of material, they differ in additional characteristics.
Application area plasterboard Knauf - any premises, except those where humidity is high. Usually, this type of material is used when performing repair and construction works. The size of Knauf drywall can be 2500x1200 or 3000x1200 with a thickness of 9.5 mm, 12.5 mm.
Area of use moisture-proof drywall Knauf - rooms with high humidity. Application in such conditions is possible due to a special coating - impregnated cardboard, it does not soak and does not delaminate under the influence of moisture, and antifungal preparations added to the composition of gypsum exclude the development of fungi and mold on its surface. Nevertheless, experts still do not recommend using the material in rooms with excessively high humidity and high saturation with water vapor.
Knauf-drywall fireproof can be used in the construction of facilities with increased fire hazard, for example - fireplaces, with the equipment of a heated floor, for facing radiators. Cardboard is not used in the manufacture of the material; instead, gypsum is coated with a special composition that is not subject to fire and does not transfer heat.
If necessary, facing curved surfaces, such as columns or arches, use flexible gypsum plasterboards RIGIPS Rigiform. The plasticity of the material is obtained by reinforcing the gypsum layer with fiberglass.
There is also a variety of drywall at the same time possessing fire and moisture resistant qualities.
By purpose, drywall is divided into:
- wall, its thickness is 12.5 mm,
- arched, with a thickness of 6.6 mm,
- ceiling 9.5 mm thick.
The name of the species itself indicates the preferred area of their application. Since the sizes of sheets are different, before calculating the amount of material, you should check with the seller their dimensions - this will help to avoid shortage of material or purchase an excessive quantity.
Mounting Features
Installation of Knauf drywall can be done in different ways:
- using CD and UD profiles, i.e. on a metal frame
- constructing a frame of wooden slats and OSB-plates,
- by directly gluing to the surface of the walls using special adhesive compounds Master UNIFIX or Knauf Perlfix.
Any walls can be lined with drywall - made of concrete, foam concrete, brick, wood. When choosing a mounting option, you should first pay attention to the evenness of the surfaces that will be exposed to the finish. It should also be remembered that the metal frame has several advantages: it is more durable, not prone to fire, has a longer service life.
If frame installation technology is chosen for wall cladding, it is advisable to take care of filling the space between the profile and the drywall sheets with soundproofing or heat-insulating materials. For example, you can use environmentally friendly materials from the same Knauf company: MasterOK or Knauf Insulation.
An important point in the construction of the frame is the exact alignment of the levels, labels can be affixed using a laser or ordinary water level. Since the width of the drywall sheets is 1200 mm, the step between the supporting profiles should be 600 mm. In this case, the adherence of the sheets to each other will be as dense as possible. For rigidity of the frame, it is recommended to use an additional fastening of the supporting profile to the walls or ceiling with the help of U-shaped brackets. In accordance with the material from which the frame is made, self-tapping screws are selected: for metal or for wood.
If it is possible to carry out installation with glue, then the surface of the walls will need to be thoroughly cleaned of dirt and dust, the remnants of the old finish or paint. Previously, the surface of the walls should be treated with an acrylic primer, the concrete wall can be covered with Concrete contact - a primer containing quartz sand. The glue is applied to the drywall sheets, press them against the wall and tap. When performing work, carefully check that the gluing is correct using a level.
For sealing joints between sheets, putty and reinforcing tape or special Knauf UNIFLOTT putty are used for sealing joints (can be used without reinforcing tape).
Post-assembly processing
If gypsum plasterboard is to be painted as a finish, then its surface will need to be treated with putty - the material itself does not absorb paint. They putty the gypsum plasterboard surface even if it is necessary to eliminate the gaps between the sheets or bring the surface to a perfectly even state.
Since drywall is sufficiently resistant to moisture, it can be used in kitchens. In this case, tiles are often used as decoration - it holds well on drywall, but if the joints are neatly puttied and then saturated with a primer.
Use in modern repair
Knauf drywall has characteristics that allow it to be used for creating interior partitions, for wall cladding, for modernizing ceilings, and for creating decorative details in residential and public buildings.
dropped ceilings
Gypsum plasterboard suspended ceilings are very popular today, their construction requires quite a bit of time, with the simplicity of manufacture they look quite impressive. The design of the false ceiling and the fire safety of the material allow it to carry out electrical wiring. The backlight built into such a ceiling gives a special appeal to any interior. The appearance of moisture-proof panels made it possible to build multi-level ceilings in rooms of any type, including in the kitchen.
The arrangement of the ceiling with lighting is:
- in the construction of the frame from a metal profile,
- performing wiring
- inserts socles in drywall,
- mounting plates on a metal frame.
Next, you can proceed to the decorative decoration of the ceiling.
arches
No less popular element of interior decoration are arches. For their construction, flexible plasterboard is often used - its use allows the construction of an arch of the most intricate form. The high-quality performance of such decorative elements is very important when creating refined, original interiors.
shelves, racks, attacks
All these stylish decor elements of various shapes and sizes can also be constructed from drywall, due to its high strength properties, long life and wear resistance.
bathroom finish
The use of drywall for walls and ceilings in the bathroom can be considered acceptable only if:
- the material is classified as moisture resistant and contains additional antifungal impurities in gypsum,
- high-quality exhaust ventilation is installed in the bathroom
- utilities will not be covered with plasterboard.
Another reason for popularity
Knauf drywall, the price of which fits easily even in a modest budget repair, is often used for the construction of partitions in the premises - the cost of material and installation is quite comparable with the performance of brickwork. But at the same time drywall does not lead to a significant weighting of structures. The use of moisture-proof drywall can have some effect on the general estimate of home repairs, but since it is recommended for use in the bathroom and in the kitchen, the effect on the total amount will still not be significant.
Recommendations for installation work
- To work with drywall just for pleasure, the material should be stored correctly: in a dry room, sheets should be placed horizontally.
- Installation work should be carried out in the warm season or in a heated room, the temperature in it should not be lower than +10 C.
- Installation work should begin after laying plumbing and electrical communications.
- Before work, drywall should be kept in the room where it will be installed - for acclimatization.
- To properly arrange the seams between the sheets, it is enough to chamfer 1/3 of the thickness of the sheet.
Material benefits
- Using Knauf drywall allows you to perform work with high speed and excellent performance.
- Finishing work can be done with the exception of uncomfortable wet processes.
- Knauf drywall weight is quite low, which ultimately contributes to the relief of structures and gives overall savings on construction.
- The material is environmentally friendly, its use in housing does not pose a threat to human health.
- Drywall sheets are vapor-permeable, they tend to absorb excess moisture, and when the humidity in the room decreases, release it into the surrounding space.
