History of the Austrian curtains
Looking back, you can see that the fashion for Austrian curtains originated in the middle of the 18th century, which is associated with the prevailing aristocratic culture, which determined the preferences of consumers.
Combining the splendor of classics and the pragmatism of modern times, they became the most successful synthesis of two opposing styles, which contributed to their popularization in the most prestigious houses of Europe.
Austrian Curtain Design
The design of the Austrian curtains incorporates the structural elements of Roman and french curtains.
The classic splendor of the folds and the bends formed by them allow creating a feminine harmonious balance, and the functional system of their regulation, represented by a lifting mechanism, dilutes the soft lines of the draperies with respectability and solidity.
A balanced combination of French splendor and Roman austerity allows the use of Austrian curtains to decorate both luxurious mansions and small-sized rooms, giving them the old-fashioned charm of classics.
Austrian curtains - a universal element of decor
As mentioned above, most designers consider Austrian curtains in the interior a universal element of decor. This point of view has become widespread in the world of design in connection with the constructive solution of curtains.
Austrian curtains are mounted on a cornice, in which there are devices for cords, while the upper edge of the canvas is collected with curtain tape, and the fabric freely falls down, forming soft horizontal folds. These folds are like an accordion, which is due to the slats attached to the wrong side of the curtains. In the lowered state, the Austrian curtains are several paintings that form folds in the lower part. It should also be remembered that weighting agents are sewn into the lower part of the curtains, which give them a shape. Thus, the Austrian curtains, in fact, are curtains with a double compression ratio, the raising of which is carried out using cords.

The fastening of Austrian curtains is carried out using a profile cornice for lifting curtains, on which one half of the Velcro is provided. The second half is sewn to the upper edge of the fabric. Eaves for Austrian curtains are classified according to the length, weight, as well as the number of lifting blocks. Depending on the installation system, the cornices are installed directly in the window opening, on the ceiling or wall.
All of the above design features allow Austrian curtains to transform from decorative to functional, which makes them a universal element of decor.
fabric selection
The fabric used for sewing Austrian curtains also has its own characteristics.
Fabrics should be preferred elastic and wrinkled. These materials can be dense silk, satin fabrics, moire or cambric, which have shiny surfaces and are able to form clear folds. Quite often, a choice can fall on a veil, the transparency of which gives the interior an exquisite lightness. Originality is given to the decor with the help of braid or cords, decorated with tassels, which allow you to focus on clearly defined folds.

They can also be supplemented with curtains or labrets of a suitable color.
How to sew an Austrian curtain?
Having dealt with all the features of the curtains, it's time to answer the question: How to sew an Austrian curtain? As practice shows, this is not particularly difficult. If you have stocked up material for the manufacture of curtains (main fabric and lining), then you can safely proceed to sewing them.
cloth cutting and tailoring
The first step is to calculate the amount of fabric: first you need to measure the length of the cornice and the height from the floor. The width of the fabric is calculated as two and a half lengths of the cornice, taking into account allowances for the seams.
The length of the cord should be equal to the sum of two lengths and widths. Having cut out two canvases from the lining and curtain fabrics, they must be sewn with their faces to each other along the longitudinal and lower sections. Do not forget about the fringe, which must be sewn along the lower edge.
braid preparation
The next step is to prepare a braid on which rings are sewn at a distance of not less than 50 cm and not more than 80 cm.
The distance between the tapes is chosen arbitrarily. If the braid is ready, or you prefer a ready-made curtain braid, then it must be hemmed to the upper edge of the canvas, having previously folded it 2 cm. After completing these recommendations, tighten the finished fabric to the size of the cornice.
final stages
Then we thread the cord into the rings, tying a knot at both ends. The final stage in the creation of the Austrian curtain will be its fastening on a wooden plank just below the curtain braid. For the braid you need to hang the curtain on the ledge. The curtain is ready! Now you can adjust the curtains in height, and use the cords as a decorative addition. If you want your curtain to have a more regular shape, sew a load into the bottom of the canvas that will align it according to your requirements.
